pebble agony auntThe pill's main use is for birth control so of course people are going to address that. You did not mention whether you were having sex or not, so how can you expect us to know?

We were just addressing all aspects of the pill, like you seemed to want.

Your doctor has obviously put you on it to regulate your periods. That's fine, it will you a regular cycle that you can rely on.

The pill contains a synthetic version of the hormones that are already in our bodies. It's not poison at all.

It's not 100% safe and there are some risks but that should have been explained in the leaflet in your pill box.

If you don't want to take it then that's your perogative, but you're not the first woman to be prescribed the pill and you won't be the last.

Good luck!

This is verified as being by the original poster of the question

Wow.... Hold it there.... I just wanted to know What some of the reason are for this.... My doctor put me on this because of my 'period' skipping and being delayed... He wanted it to balance out properly, the whole idea of unprotected sex? Um.... Wow the thought has crossed my mind but please.... The day i find or have a husband is the day I'll think of that. I have other things to worry about right now..It was just the idea of some man made chemicals 'poisoning' my body was the part that scared me.... But Thanx for being so concerned!(",)

A female reader, pebble United Kingdom +, writes (8 June 2009):

pebble agony auntThe last poster gave a pretty good description of what it's meant for birth control wise.Just a few more things I would like to add.

Not only is it used for birth control but for other menstrual related symptoms also. It is fantastic for getting the cycle into a regular rhythm that the body wouldn't be able to do on it's own.

For example, if you have irregular periods, it will put them into a predictable pattern for you.

Or if you have extreme period pain when you menstruate, then it will calm them down.

It can also be used to help balance minor hormone imbalances in the body. For example, if a hormone imbalance is giving you bad spots, or mood swings. Then it will help with those.

Basically, it overrides your natural hormonal cycle and creates a 'fake' cycle that is simple and hopefully easier to manage than the one you had before.

Millions of women around the world use it effectively. Though I understand how changes in the body can be scary, it's really nothing to be scared of.

Hope I helped a bit :)

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (8 June 2009):

k_c100 agony auntThe pill is 100% safe and hardly interferes with your body, it has minimal side effects and is purely to stop you getting pregnant. It does not stop the spread of STD's therefore if you are having regular sex you need to still use condoms to prevent you catching a disease.

As the post below says, the pill is made out of 2 hormones (called the combined pill). There is also another pill which only contains one of the hormones but they basically do the same thing (stop you releasing an egg and thicken the cervix). The pill has no other impact on your body, it only affects the reproductive area of your body. There is nothing to be scared of and as soon as you decide you want to stop taking the pill, within a few months your body will be releasing an egg again and there will be no trace of the pill left.

I dont really understand what scares you about the pill? You must be taking it for a reason - generally it is taken to prevent pregnancy but in some cases people take it to relieve their periods (it makes them shorter and less painful) and some take it to improve their skin (it helps with acne). What do you mean by cleaning out your system? The pill does not "clear" anything it only prevents you getting pregnant.

So basically if you are having sex and do not want a baby at the moment then the pill is the right thing for you to be using and will not affect your body or health in any way, except to stop you releasing that egg. If you are not having sex then I'm not sure why your doctor would prescribe it, maybe you should speak to him/her and they may be able to put your mind at ease.

I hope this helps!

A reader, anonymous, writes (8 June 2009):

The Pill is a pill which contains two female hormones - oestrogen and progestogen.

These two hormones stop you from ovulating (producing an egg) each month. And if you don’t ovulate, you won’t get pregnant. The hormones thicken the secretions round your cervix, making it more difficult for sperm to get through. Also, they make the lining of your womb thinner, so that it’s less receptive to an egg.

If you take it exactly as prescribed, then its effectiveness is likely to be almost 100 per cent.
