Question - (13 September 2009) 2 Answers - (Newest, 14 September 2009)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

ive put on a little weight over the last couple of years, and my boyfriend has suggested i come off the pill. its always been a good choice to go on it, the sex feels better for both of us and its safer than using condoms. altho ive tried a few different ones i always seem to have bad mood swings, and i have had weight gain since being on the pill, hes suggesting to come off it, see if it makes any difference to my weight, and sex can last longer when hes wearing a condom because the sensation isnt as strong apparently. i think these are good points, but im more concerned about the price of condoms, the feeling when we use them, the risk of them breaking. but the weight is becoming a strain on the relationship because im losing my confidene quickly, as much as i try to lose it by eating healthily and using the gym it wont shift.

does anyone have any advice on which is the best way to go??

person12345 agony auntWhy not try a copper IUD? First off, there are no hormones so there can't be weight gain or mood swings. Secondly, it is effective for 10 years so it's by far the cheapest. It's also more effective than the pill because it's constant, and you can't forget to take it. I'm thinking of getting one myself.

A male reader, koenig United Kingdom +, writes (13 September 2009):

A review of medical studies about the pill and weight gain by the Cochrane Library (it's a source of information for doctors), found that there is no significant weight gain from taking the pill.

I really would suggest you stick with a hormonal contraceptive rather than a barrier one (like condoms) because they're considerably more effective at preventing pregnancy. You could look into a copper IUD (which isn't a hormonal or barrier contraceptive) if you're that intent on cutting out the extra hormones.

Your diet is likely to be more the problem. Either too many calories or the wrong kind of diet. If you haven't looked into the GI diet, please do look into it. It's just about the only diet I've seen that has a sensible scientific basis to it. Buy a book on it and trial it for a few months, I'm sure you'll see the difference.

Other than that, things like walking instead of driving can help shed the pounds.
