dear cupid, I need some help. I am in first year at university and I originally got into a language course last month. I liked this as I enjoy languages however my original first choice was primary teaching. when I got offered this in the second round of offers I accepted it so now I am doing primary teaching. my main reasons for accepting it were that it is a 3 year course unlike the language course which is 4 years, that I dont have to live abroad for a year (unlike the language course) and that I could stay living here with my family who needs me. the problem is I actually hate the primary teaching course. I have been doing it for 3 weeks now. I have a load of assignments to do, the people on it are not very friendly and a bit stand offish. I have a feeling deep down that I have made the wrong choice as languages is what I always saw myself making a career in and I actually miss studying French and Spanish every day. any advice on what I can do to put this right would be appreciated!!

hi its me again (the person who wrote in) I cant live for a whole year in Europe because both of my parents need me for different reasons & there is no one else to help them if Im gone.I would feel guilty if I left them. I love doing languages and the language course would have qualified me to teach French &Spanish in a secondary school. I just dont know what to do.

Irish Anon. You should change your courses now, I think. Primary teaching is very important, and not many are really "meant" for it. It takes a special type of person who really "wants" to do it. If you love the Languages, that is what you should go for. You can also teach in that field if you want. I would think the demand for teachers of languages is great, as it is here. You say you are "needed" at home. Well, I don't know your situation there. I just know that you should not get into a field that you are not happy in. You are talking about the rest of your life, here. Talk with a mentor, or whatever you call an advising teacher. Best wishes, Tom

You could talk to an advisor and get it changed, although three weeks in might be too late. Here in the states it usually is.

Overall I agree with baybee-x-sparki. I don't know what it is like where you are, but here you can get the certification to teach and major in something else. This sounds like a good start to doing that.

Ask yourself this question: what is your end goal? Do you want to drop the class because you don't like the class or because you don't think you want to teach any more? If you don't want to teach, then drop it. But if you want to teach and are just concerned with the "now" portion, I'd say try sticking with it. However, and again this is a perspective from America again, teaching foreign languages is usually more for secondary teaching. Perhaps next semester you could switch into that if you think you'd be happier. The courses you take now may even overlap.

baybee-x-sparkii agony auntcould you possibly do both? I mean why not compromise and do teaching foreign languages? that way you get the best of both worlds? either that or stick with what you have, you are lucky to get what you did, and if you do really have a problem with it, talk to your mentor or whoever is in charge.....

good luck
