A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Okay well, I'm supposed to go to a waterpark with my boyfriend next Saturday(June 13th) for his birthday but, I can start my period anywhere between now and then. I'm on birth control so my periods don't last long and are light. What I need to ask is, what can I do to stop me from bleeding in the water when we go to the waterpark? I'm not allowed to wear tampons, my mom won't let me, I wear pads and I really do want to go and I don't wanna disappoint my boyfriend. Any ideas?

There are potential dangers to using tampons, as there are with anything that we use. Problems are very rare, but they do exist. Here is one good recent article outlining the possible dangers of tampons.

http://www.center4research.org/wmnshlth/2005/tamponsafety.html

Note that the US CDC has documented deaths because of toxic shock syndrome blamed on the use of tampons. Of course, many more people probably die from taking aspirin then from the use of tampons.

The cancer risk comes from the dioxins created by the tampon bleaching process and it is possible that many years of dioxin exposure can cause cancer, although there is no absolute proof of this. There are companies that use only cotton in tampons and they contain less dioxins. Every thing that makes our lives easier has health risks involved, regardless of how small. We have to weigh the risks vs. the enjoyment of life with anything we use or do. You can die crossing the street to see a friend.

Basically, the risk of using tampons is extremely low, but it is there.

Your mother is rather ill-informed. Tampons don't cause cancer or nine-tenths of the female population would be on death's door. However, they can cause toxic shock if left in for too long, and that's serious, so regular changing is important.

Thanks for the advice guys! I talked to my mom, and she said the reason she doesn't want me wearing tampons is because they can cause cancer. My hymen is already broke and I'm not a virgin. She doesn't know that but I did talk to her and she said she would let me get tampons and I told her I'd only wear them when I'm swimming and I'd wear pads any other time. But one other question, does wearing/putting in a tampon hurt?

I'd buy a tampon and not tell my mum.

kellyxxx agony auntJust buy some tampons and practise using them when you have started you period, read the leaflet carefully. Don't worry about your mum telling you not to wear them, just flush the tampon in the toilet and hide the wrappers and box and dispose of them yourself. When you are wearing a tampon you shouldn't leak any blood if you use the right absorbancy. Maybe get an assortment to see which tampo is right for you and get used to putting them in and taking them out. X

eyeswideopen agony auntTalk to your mom, she's living in the last century, yuck pads? If you use a tampon you'll be just fine and have a lovely time. If your mom allows you to be on birth control pills I really don't understand the pads thing.

Hey! If you havent gone a day without taking a pill yet, then take an extra week of pills from another pack and then take your break after your boyfriends birthday! If not and you have had a pill free day, then you can start another pack agian and that should stop you getting your period BUT you CANNOT rely on that for contraception!

Hope that helps!

The only way is to ignore your mother and use a tampon. I can't see why she has this attitude towards tampons unless she thinks you'll lose your virginity or something.

The Tampax adverts say you can go swimming, ride a bike, go horse riding etc etc. You're a big girl now - you do what's comfortable for you and suits your lifestyle. Your mother is way out of order and she needs a reality check.
