A reader, anonymous, writes (1 April 2010):

The term "period" lends itself to much confusion among women. Menstrual bleeding is a physiologic event in which the uterine lining is shed when conception fails to take place. By definition, one cannot have such bleeding after conception takes place. However, vaginal bleeding can occur after conception that mimics menstrual bleeding. The bleeding episode can be so similar to normal menses that the woman does not even realize that she is pregnant. Also, pregnant women can (and frequently do) have more than one episode of bleeding and these episodes can even come four weeks apart. While it is uncommon for pregnancy bleeding to closely mimic regular cycles, it can happen, and continue to happen for up to six months into the pregnancy.

A female reader, EbonyBlossom United Kingdom +, writes (31 March 2010):

EbonyBlossom agony auntNo, it's not possible to have a period while you're pregnant. The blood that you shed exists in the womb to cushion the baby, and only discards to start afresh if you don't conceive. The only bleeding I can think of during pregnancy would either be caused my a miscarriage or an internal cut.
