One week on the pill - had unprotected sex during period

Question - (29 May 2009) 7 Answers - (Newest, 29 May 2009)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

So earlier today i had unprotected sex with my boyfriend and he ejaculated in me. I've been on microgynon 30 for a week today and so far have taken 7 pills in a row religiously at 4:50pm (when i took my first pill last friday). It's only 10am however, so i haven't taken my 8th pill.

i want to know if there is any chance of me being pregnant? I am still on my period and it looks like it's not backing down. My normal cycle is 5 days and this one has been 7 days so far, which i am confused about. I took the morning after pill about 1 and a half months ago and both my periods since then have been a week early, hence why i decided to go on the pill for the last period. I'm just wondering if there are so many hormones in my body that there won't be a chance I'm pregnant; but i'm not sure.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you to those who actually know what the hell they are talking about.

Firstly - this sex wasn't planned and blahblahblah.

Secondly - we can't use condoms. My boyfriend is too big for them and they basically suffocate his penis and he goes flaccid, also he can't feel anything with them on. The pill is a better option for us due to this reason.

I took the microgynon on the first day of my period, to clarify.

Thank you especially to the person below; you've been a great help. =]

My boyfriend also did research into it previously and spouted pretty much the same stuff, even though i had already read it - i was just not sure. I'm a worry wart! Haha.

Thanks again. x

Seriously some of you agony aunts dont read the question very well. Im a nurse i specialise with things like this everyday, and its sites like this that confuse the younger generation and so then thats when things go wrong. If you ever have any doubts go see your nurse she'll give you some really helpfull leaflets okay?

If you started taking the microgynon 30 on the first day of your period you are protected STRAIGHT AWAY. Which you said you are still on your period, so im asuming you did.

K c 100 really doesnt have a clue what she's on about. Starting at the end of your period would mean that your not protected for 7 days. Most doctors advise to start taking the pill at the start of your period, so then there is no chance that an egg is released so no pregnancy chance.

Dont worry about the morning after pill, it only stays in your system for 120 hours after you have taken it, hence why it doesnt protect you against pregnancy after you ahve taken it. So it wont effect the pill, ( it doesnt effect the pill anyway) hormones dont work like that.

Youv done the write thing apart from asking adivce on a site like this, your on the pill so your having protected sex and your taking it at the same time everyday. Keep this up and you have more chance at winning the lottery than getting pregnant! Just make sure if your not sure about your partner, or change your parter regurlary you use a condom- as the pill doesnt protect against sti's as i guess youve been told.

Good luck xxx

After taking the pill (I take Microgynon too btw) for 7-8 days your are protected and can safely have sex without getting pregnant.

Whether you are on your period or not it doesn't matter, if you have taken Microgynon before your period and then had sex during the required break from the pill, you are still protected.

Read the instructions that come with Microgynon for other questions you may have (found inside the box).

Last thing: Its not gross to have sex while on the period, sheez people...

sexyhunnibbe001 agony auntRepying back to the previous comment: when you first start that pill you start on the first day of your period...NOT after.

I am on that same pill.

You should be protected from the first week of taking the pill. So you should be safe.

You shouldn't get pregnant but of course everything has risks....I would take a test in 2 weeks time....just to be on the safe side.

But next time try to use a condom...get him to buy some and/or keep one on you as well :)

Hope all goes well.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (29 May 2009):

k_c100 agony auntI'm confused - why are you taking the pill whilst on a period? And why would you have sex whilst on your period? Thats just gross!

Normally with microgynon you should take the pill for 21 days then have a 7 day break, when your period arrives. If you have only just got the pill for the first time ever you should have waited until your period ends and then start taking the pill, that way you will not mess up your body's cycle.

Anyway, it seems highly unlikely you are pregnant. It is very unusual for people to get pregnant whilst on their period (the egg has not travelled far enough down the fallopian tubes at this point so the sperm wont be able to reach it, and they have to battle their way through all the gross bits leaving your body!). So not only is it unlikely to get pregnant whilst having a period, it is also unlikely that you will be pregnant when you have been taking the pill (it normally offers some cover immediately going up to full cover after a week).

So I dont think there is much chance you are, but there is still a small chance. Wait and see if your next period arrives, and if it sill hasnt come (around 1-2 weeks late) then take a test. But try not to worry in the mean time, the more you worry the more likely you mind will play games and make your period late!

I hope this helps!

Well u can get pregnat u haven't been on the pill long enough for your cycle and body to get in the not releasing eggs. And u need to use condoms stds are out there and the day after pill is not the answer all the time. Bit its good u are trying to protect ur self but ur not using it the right way. When ur on the pill it takes time for it to work. U shouldn't be not using condoms so soon. And getting on the pill so he can cum inside without getting pregnat is not the answer, if u really don't wanna get pregant use a condom and the pill. There's a 1 perecnt chance u can still get pregnat on the pill. Your young and I'm sure ur not ready for a baby or an STD giys cheat women cheat and u don't wanna not use condoms!!! So rap it up and u will have no worries
