 oh my dear ...so you're a good friends right? and great friends tell each other every thing i mean there are no secrets no hidden diaries none of this stuff so try to take the good moment when you're with him(alone) and ask him directly and nicely too (so you won't hurt him):" do you like boys?" and no matter what if he is gay or not always make him feel that you're by his side and you're supporting him and he'll tell you the truth about who he is 1/if he is staight take the chance to be with him 2/if he is gay i am sorry for that but try to make him straight and if you coudn't then be at least his best friend .....good luck sweety.
