Odds of pregnancy when on pill and withdrawal?

A male United States age 36-40, *man writes:

Last weekend I had unprotected sex (no condom) with my girlfriend. She is on the pill, and I pulled out before I came, but the possibility of pregnancy is still a little worry. I was just wondering if anyone knows the odds of pregnancy if the girl is on the pill and you pull out? Should I worry at all?

They are from Wikipedia but I read it as percentage failure rate in the FIRST YEAR of use.

So pretty much the odds of it failing on you.

It's a percentage so it's not the number of failures a year so much as the amount of times it fails.

As I say, condoms and pill are best combined.

Good Luck!! xx

Just to be clear... failure rates are per year (as on wikipedia), not per-go?

The contraceptive pill has a failure rate of 0.3% when you take it perfectly and 8% if she takes it wrong.

The Pulling out method has a failure rate of 27%.

She should be ok if she was taking the pill correctly and not missing any, but you should use this scare as a good reason to always use condoms.

Good Luck!! xx

A female reader, anonymous, writes (4 February 2009):

the pill is one of the effective forms of contraception (97-99%)

however, i would not trust the withdrawel method as pre cum can still get a woman pregnant.

i am on the pill and me and my boyfriend have both been checked for STI's so we only use the pill as contraception, there is a very low chance of your girlfriend being pregnant.

bethx
