He's quite professional about the classes he's responsible for, so I get the feeling he would object to dating a student just on principle . . . But anyway, I'd like to just get to know him but he flusters me. Should I try anyway or just keep to myself? Advice?

Dont pursue him, there really is no point in doing that. Teachers are not allowed to date students, regardless of the age of the teacher so he would lose his job if he dated you. Therefore you should not put him in a position where his job could be compromised, so just leave him alone and focus on your studies.
I'm sure there are plenty of other guys your own age at your college who are hot, so focus your attentions of them rather than someone you cannot have.
I hope this helps and good luck!

Keep to yourself. I don't know specifically about your college, but in most places a dalliance with a student costs the teacher his job.
