Hi, i was readin some of the questions here and wanted some advice...sometimes when i havent had sex for a while i miss periods, its realy strange. Its been over a year since i last had sex, but a couple months after i split with my ex i missed a couple. I had 2 normal periods after I last had sex, then missed 2 and now theyre normal again. I wasnt pregnant.

This always happens when Ive had a long break from sex.

Is this normal? Has it happened to anyone else?

person12345 agony auntI would speak to a doctor. This does not sound completely typical and could be a hormone imbalance.

DrPsych agony auntIt is possible that you are sensitive to stress, or you have changed your lifestyle such as diet or exercise. Profound stress or lifestyle changes can cause disruption to your cycle. It is also possible that you have an underlying medical condition that just manifests itself with no-period symptoms from time to time. Polycystic ovaries can cause an irregular cycle, as can an underactive thyroid and many other conditions. I suggest you see a doctor for a check up. If you are not getting a period at least once in 6 months (and you are not taking the contraceptive pill), then it is wise to take tablets that a doctor can prescribe to force a period to start (progesterone tablets). The reason is that it can be problematic to your health if the lining of the womb is building up unchecked. It can lead to a condition called endometrial hyperplasia (which means an overgrowth of the womb lining). This puts you are greater risk of womb cancer than women who are having regular periods. Therefore you should keep an eye on your cycles just to be on the safe side.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (18 August 2010):

Tisha-1 agony auntWhat did your doctor say when you asked her or him? Maybe you have something going on with your hormones that causes this? Are you eating well? Do you have any other conditions?

I think your best bet is to have it checked out and make sure you don't have some underlying condition that is causing this. Why worry about this when you can so easily ask your doctor?

Good luck!

LilPixie agony auntI'm not sure if it's normal or not because I have never heard of this happening before.

Periods can be late or skipped all together for a lot of reasons. If you are using hormonal birth control such as the pill it could be caused by that. Another major factor for period being irregular is stress.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, maybe one of the other aunts/uncles can help you more
