A female reader, SugarCookie United States +, writes (28 June 2008):

Be thankful. I started when I was 11 and got on the depo at 15 and stopped having my period which I was so glad it stopped. Cramps are not fun. When my period first started the cramps had me in a ball on the floor and everything was ok with me. After a few periods I got used to the cramps and they would only make my wince a little. It is nothing to rush. The later you start the later you will hit menopause so just wait it out and enjoy not having cramps. !)

scrazy agony auntNothing wrong with being a late bloomer - trust me, I wish I got my period later.

There's nothing you can do but wait it out.

Trust me when I say, enjoy this period of your life while you can. (Pun intended.)

You are fine. I did not start mine til I was almost 15 years old and I've developed just fine. :) Be glad your body isn't eager to start the process. It isn't very fun.

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (28 June 2008):

DrPsych agony auntThat is perfectly normal! Some girls do not start until they are 17 and then it isn't regular. If you havent started in a year or two, go to the GP for a hormone check up but in the meantime try not to worry. Stages of puberty happen at different times for different people and there is really nothing wrong with you.

A male reader, Marco262 United States +, writes (28 June 2008):

Unless you have any other serious medical problems, I don't think you have anything to worry about. The rate at which the human body matures is different for everyone. Many girls might say you're lucky to have not had a period yet, anyways. So enjoy it while it lasts. ;-)

If you're really worried, though, talk to your parents about it. They can help set up a consultation with your doctor and he can give you a more professional opinion. Or, if you're not comfortable talking to your parents about this, a school guidance counselor or a volunteer at Planned Parenthood can also provide helpful information.

A male reader, Hench United Kingdom +, writes (27 June 2008):

The average age for girls starting their periods is approx. 10 - 15 years old, so you are still within the average age bracket for starting your periods, so technically you should have nothing to worry about...

However, if you are worried about your body, and none of the answers on the site have helped, then maybe you should see a doctor about it, and/or organise to see a specialist at your nearest health clinic...

But remember, everyones body is different and unique, and develops at different stages, there is no set age for the start of pubity, for both boys and girls,

But goodluck anyway, hope this information has helped x

A female reader, anonymous, writes (27 June 2008):

Don't panic. You're just one of the late ones that's all :) I was one (I had to wait till I was sixteen until I got mine) and looking back I remember feeling very anxious about it and wondering what on earth was taking it so long. The truth is, teenage girls are acting older a hell of a lot quicker these days. We're having sex younger, wearing thongs and stilettos younger and attempting to grow up as fast as possible... mentally this is true - but physically, you can't grow up when you feel like it. Biology is uncontrollable. You'll get your period when your body is ready... it might be next week, it might be in three years (it sucks, but it's true!). Be patient, carry 'supplies' in case it appears when you least expect it and don't worry about it. Relax, everyone matures differently. :)

A female reader, jen.helping you to be happy United Kingdom +, writes (27 June 2008):

jen.helping you to be happy agony aunthi there, it is perfectly normal to have not started your periods at the age of 14 years, some girls do not start their periods until they are in their late teens, maybe even older. I personally would say enjoy the time you have before your periods start. You have nothing to worry about, maybe if you could talk to your mother or a female relative they could put your mind at rest. You are only young and there is nothing wrong in starting your periods at a much later age. Take Care and don't worry.
