 Nicknames are great, just avoid any lovey-dovey ones like "darling" or "sweetheart." They're annoying and they reduce your sex drive.
They should be personal, though. Like an inside joke. No need to get one yet, just wait until something happens that makes you call him something, and use that if it feels right.

 No no, you've got to figure out something on your own, nicknames mean nothing devoid of a personal emotional content and may be obnoxious if chosen by a third party.
My ex used to call me Big Duck, there was a long and complicated inside joke behind it, that only belonged to the two of us, and when he called me this way I loved it. I assure that if anybody would call me with an animal name , out of context and out of the blue, I would be very annoyed, and offended too !
