Children start verbalising speech sounds in the first year of life such as da,da and ca, ca. However, as individuals we all develop at a different rate. You can help by reading books and singing songs - receptive language (understanding you) kicks in well before expressive language (speaking). My little monster is 16 months old and he started with Da, da at around 6-8 months...he knew who daddy was by 8 months for sure. Baba came next at about 12 months and he knows he is 'baba' and points to other baba's in his books. My mother taught him the meaning of eyes and nose using books at around 13 months and he will point to his own facial features if you ask him, but he cannot say those words yet. 'Mama' kicked in around 12-13 months clearly and he now calls me 'Mum' (when he is in a very serious I want feeding mode). I think he is also trying to say hello but struggling with some syllables in there and calls the cat 'ca ca'. It is an absolute joy to see your baby develop over time but don't worry if they are not gliding through development milestones - every child is different.

I talked in complete [simple] sentences when I was 6 months old. My bf said his first word at 8 months. I'm 6 months pregnant && can't wait to hear my son talk =]

LOL
But seriously, that is not too far from the truth though. My best friend in college had a nephew that only started to talk when he was three and half years old. The parents went to specialists etc and they all said he was fine for his age. Until the 4th doctor, a GP, noticed the parents' behaviour.
So the doctor said "stop meeting his non-verbal and gesture requests' and sure enough. by the third day of this treatment, the little boy uttered his first complete sentence! So what happened was, the parents "understood" their son's non-verbal "language" that the child just got a bit lazy to actually speak the words! But, being a bright little child, he had absorbed and learnt the verbal language quietly.
Now this kid has grown up to be a lawyer! lol
Cat
Btw, Niki, have you heard this one: First they call you Da, then they called you Dad, then they called you Collect! lol
Enjoy your baby!

Which reminds me of a little joke:
Little Tommy was 3 years old and had never spoken a word. His mother was so very worried. Then one morning at breakfast he said,
" Mother Dear, would you please be so kind to put a couple more sprinkles of sugar on my cereal?"
His mother gasped,
"Why Tommy! Why haven't you spoken before this?"
Tommy replied,
"Everything has been fine up until now."
