I'm embarrassed to ask this on a public website but at the same time, I'm thankful for the anonymity of the Internet.

This isn't a relationship question, by the way, but it's REALLY bothering me. I'm not cochina (dirty), and I try to keep clean-- but my shoes SMELL!! Friends have mentioned this to me, and I feel really bad about myself, because no matter how hard I try, I feel dirty and disgusting... like my body is betraying me. I don't know what's wrong with me. I don't wear the same pair of shoes every day; I have tried wearing socks, nothing helps. I feel like a nasty pig and I'm so ashamed. is there any solution to this, or am I destined to smell the rest of my life? This is a serious post, this is starting to drive me crazy.

Howdy! The best way is to replace the insoles! Just put some cedarsoles (inserts made from good smelling cedar wood) inside your shoes and your problems will gone! Believe me - that's the most effective way!

Keep your feet clean and change your socks twice a day.

Also if you have athletes foot, then get that cured that can be really bad for smelly feet.

I have smelly feet too and my shoes stink sometimes. What I do is leave them outside over night and air them out, that works for me. Mixing lemon juice with water and putting it into one of those plant misters is great too.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (31 March 2011):

Do they even have "Odor Eaters" in Spain? If not, they're shoe inserts. Try some talcum powder, or corn starch.

Wearing socks is a good start, but if your feet sweat a lot you'll need something to kill any bacteria. Look for some spray designed for that- also, airing out the shoes, in the sun might help.

A female reader, SweetSmoochy United States +, writes (31 March 2011):

SweetSmoochy agony auntFoot odor is the result of bacteria. Exfoliate your feet with a scrub, clean under your nails with soap and a brush, and then dry them well. Put on some sweet smelling lotion after if you want to.

Secondly, wash all of your shoes thoroughly before you wear them to get rid of the odor. Allow them to dry completely before wearing them.

After that, always use socks in your shoes and maybe invest in a foot antiperspirant.

Best of Luck

A male reader, anonymous, writes (31 March 2011):

Also try to make sure your feet are bone dry going in. Moisture of any kind in a shoe is your worst enemy.

Odour Eaters work well. Make sure your feet are washed every time you have been walking around barefoot at all. For any period of time.

If all else fails, try Anti-persperant or some sort of other moisture absorbing or sweat-gland blocking product.

If it still doesn't work, seek out a podiatrist.
