I think that BirdyNumNums (interesting screen name btw) is right, if you just trim the edges (don't want thigh sideburns when you put on a bathing suit) and leave the rest alone then it will eventually return to normal.
You could go to a salon and wax it, BUT... I've heard that after series of waxing sessions, the hair grows in sparser and finer. I'm too embarrassed to go to a salon but know this because I've read this in a series of books and guy friends have been for waxing.

No, Hun, You didn't mess everything up. When your pubic hair grows, for the first few years, it is a little bit less coarse. Pubic hair on adults is generally quite bristly and wiry, so I think that if you let it continue to grow, you will find it will become stubborn And curly, eventually. You may still have a few in-growns and it may take a while before it is back to normal, but please consider only trimming the edges from now on. Leaving the rest makes life a lot simpler, less Bumpy, Scratchy and Itchy! Take Care! ;^)
