If your doctor prescribes pills for an irregular, painful period, then you just tell your dad the truth (or better yet, ask the doctor to tell him). Before gearing up for the appointment, make a point of complaining about your painful periods, so that your dad knows the score.
The best thing for your periods is whatever the doctor prescribes, and most likely it will be the pill.
BTW, I was on the pill for 20 years with no ill effects. And it made me 28-day-regular with light periods. Good luck.

As a young woman it is not that unusual to have irregular cycles when you first start your periods. However, the fact that your cycle is irregular at 16/17 and heavy/long when it happens could be caused by a variety of medical conditions that need to be checked out by a doctor. Of course you can see a lady doctor and not tell your Dad if you wish. There is a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome which causes irregular periods and it is treatable (I have it). Thyroid problems are also associated with irregular periods for some women. There are lots of medical conditions that might explain your symptoms and a simple blood test would be the starting point for investigating this. It could be that nothing is wrong with you and you just have a long cycle but it is very much worth getting checked out by a doctor.

If taking pills is going to make your life easier by regulating your periods then thats the best thing for you, if thats what you choose to do. Your dad doesn't have to be part of it, go and see your doctor on your own.
If you really dont want to take the pill then you should speak to your doctor anyway, you may just be irregular because of adolescence or there might be something else that contributes to it. Your doctor will no best.
