bonym agony auntMy dear there are a lot of factors to consider for example, how old are you? Are you eating a well balanced diet. Late periods can be due to diet, i.e. under eating can cause periods to be dormant for a while, other reasons may be stress etc. If as Bev Connoly said, you are teens then she is quite right in suggesting that your cycles may not have settle yet. xXx

DrPsych agony auntI agree with the others, but one cause of irregular cycles is polycystic ovarian syndrome that affects up to 10 percent of women. A simple blood test at the doctors will exclude pregnancy, and hormone imbalances. A friend of mine took 4 home pregnancy tests over 3 months as she had no periods, they were all negative but then she went to the hospital for tummy trouble and they told her she was 4 months pregnant so it is possible to get it wrong!

Hopeful agony auntI would see your doctor - firstly, home pregnancy tests can be unreliable, secondly, this sort of behaviour of your period no doubt has a cause (diet, medication, sleep patterns, weight gain/loss etc) and a doctor will be able to help you figure out what it is and help you.

A female reader, Wendyg United Kingdom +, writes (13 June 2006):

Wendyg agony auntIm guessig its just your body having one of its changes, are you on the pill ? This can change our cycle randomly and no one knows why, but then it settles down again. The body also changes naturally around every seven years. Have you lost an amount of weight recently, are you stressed more than usual.. You may have missed your period, got a bit anxious and now that you are very anxious it could be delaying it further as stress is a very odd thing. so 3 months wihtout a period... maybe pop along to the doctor and get another test done just to be sure, if they can rule that out and its not the pill, they may be able to advise the best route to take. But the longer you worry the longer it could delay it. Check with your doctor to make sure that everything is all okay, it could just be one of those things that happens and it will sort its self out in time.

take care x

hannieseds agony auntHey there,

Have you been ill in the last 3 months? Have you been overly stressed, worrying about something, a major change in lifestyle, job, relationship? Anything like that can alter your menstral cycle, but 12 weeks is a long time not to have one at all.

I suggest you get yourself to a doctor this week and see what's going on, since you have usually been regular.

Also - when did you do the pregnancy test? It's possible that you could have done it too early and you got a false reading - so perhaps do another one now, then go to the doctor.

A female reader, Bev Conolly Australia +, writes (13 June 2006):

Bev Conolly agony auntYou don't say how old you are. If you're still in your teens, it could be just that your cycles are still not settled. It's not unusual for this to happen up to around age 16.

Stress can also affect your periods. If you've been under a lot of pressure, that can certainly throw things out of kilter. Though I have to say that 12 weeks is a long time.

Do remember please that home pregnancy tests are a great guide, but they're not as reliable as one done at a lab. If there's any chance at all of your being pregnant, I'd say you should get to the doctor to be tested. Even if not, it'd be a good idea to go and see if you can find out whether there's some problem to be addressed.
