A female reader, anonymous, writes (10 February 2008):

I'm going to give you some advice, girl.

I have faced the same problem. When I was just 13, I had a 20 year old boyfriend. He was Spanish, and in Spain, the age of consent is 13, therefore he saw nothing wrong with it.

My parents were a lot more open, but I understand your parents are not. I also found that boys my own age were too immature (still do), and that I didn't even find them attractive. So I say, if you get another boyfriend, and you wish to sleep with him, keep it secret from your mom. But use contraception! It may be prudent to seek advice from an older, wiser person, who knows about contraception (make sure you can trust them). I'm afraid you've lost with this boyfriend. He will most likely feel awkward sleeping with you after getting out of jail.

What other posters here do not seem to understand (no offense - you all gave your opinions, and I respect that) that 16 or 17 will not solve the situation. It's one year, people! But I'd still stick with a guy of 19 or 20, if I were you.

I live in South Africa, so the law is a lot more lax. There is too much murder and rape to be worried about such things. But I understand you are British. If anyone asks, however, just tell them 'We are not sleeping together'. What they don't know can't hurt them, or you.

A female reader, red1982 United Kingdom +, writes (30 January 2008):

I'm presuming he is in jail for statutory rape beacuse of your age. If this is the case then you need to also learn from this lesson, that you shouldn't be having sex at your age. It is illegal and any boyfriend you have may end up in prison for it. I know that you want to express love for your boyfirends but find a different way until you are over 16, then things will be OK.

24 is far too old for you. I understand that 15 year old boys are immature, I never went out with guys my own age but I stuck to 16 or 17 year olds and just stayed with kissing. When you hit 24 you will understand why your mum felt it was so wrong for him to be dating a 15 year old girl.

I definitley think that you should call it off with this man and let him find a woman his own age, and you stick to having fun with your friends which is what your teenage years are for.
