A female United States age 30-35, *iaBabe writes:

Hey

I need advice real bad. Ok I want to start school in Jan and I really really want to start. I've been trying to my GED for 2 years and I finally got it. I was soooo happy. But before I found out I passed the test, I got a job working with my best friends family and I was happy with that BUT I rather go to school full time and work part time. And when I got the job my boss told me he want us ( my and my best friend ) to start school soon. And we agreed. So she signed up and she starts in Jan. But I can't! So I'm gonna lose my job now. I really want to start school so much. And my parents don't care. I was so hurt for the past 2 years when I didn't have my GED/diploma and I promised myself if I got it I was going to start school. So now I'm going to be jobless and that's all my mom cares about. She doesn't care that I want to go to school, she just want me to work. And I don't mind workin part time but school Is what I want. My dad has an extra car and they won't get it fixed, I don't have my license and when I say I want a car the first thing they say is " for what? You can't drive!!!" How am I suppose to LEARN then?

Their making me so mad rite now. My mom just want to brag about me working and my older sister workin @ a bank. I just don't know. Now I'm going to be jobless and not in school!! And I'm only 19!!!

Now she and my dad are saying I'm going to get their. But how? My mom wants me to depend on other ppl for rides and I don't wanna do that. Esp since my dad has an extra car sitting in his drive way. It only needs a new radiator but he won't fix it and I don't trust him to fix it myself. I'm soooo angry, everything everybody does is pissing me off!!!! :(

A reader, anonymous, writes (3 December 2010):

Aren't you a little old for your parents to be acting this way towards you? They should accept your wishes by now, especially wishes where you're wanting to go to college! They're being very unreasonable and not thinking about what YOU want, but what THEY want. They just want you to earn money but not thinking of the bigger picture about the BETTER job you will be getting in the future by going to college AND being educated.

I don't really understand why they wouldn't want you to. You need to sit them both down and explain to them in full that this is what you want to do and this is the career path you want to take! Hopefully they will understand.
