I really have no reason to suspect anything other than what he says but i just have a "feeling" there's more to this situation than meets the eye. I guess I'm just worried because of past wrong doing by men I trusted. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to all.

If you have no other reasons to have suspicions other than the fact that you've had past wrong-doings by men, I would try to trust your fella. Is he close with his ex? What sort of relationship do they have?
Can you go with him, or at least wait in the car? I would at least meet him afterwords, that is when you'll be able to get the best read if something sketchy went on. I would get the details on the situation and try to trust him enough to let him go and do this favor...
Good luck!

why would his exs landlord call? is he a plumber? i would tell him to call a plumber for her and have her pay it. sounds weird, the landlord knows well enough im sure that they are divorced, talk to him about it and tell him how you feel.
