There are lots of reasons why you could be late; stress is one of them. But so is pregnancy, and it is possible to have your period when you're pregnant (though not likely). Please see a doctor, before you go on the pill, to make sure. Tell her what you've told us and be certain.
Many years ago I had bizarre periods, and it turns out that I wasn't ovulating. Since that's part of what triggers your cycle, it put everything out of whack. Three 10-day stints on a synthetic progesterone cleared everything up. Your solution could be that simple.

reader, anonymous, writes (2 October 2007): If you've been having periods, late or not, then you are not pregnant. And NO the pill doesn't affect the results of a pregnancy test. If you're on the pill & use condoms, there is almost 0% chance of you being pregnant anyways. Chill.
