Men are really great at making fast decisions that they later regret. This might well be one of them. Either way, I think you need to tell him to think carefully and suggest counselling one final time. If he wants out after then, grant his wish then never look back.

 I'm sorry - it sounds like seeing his ex has reminded him of life on the outside of marriage, and he wants that freedom. You don't say how serious the problems seem in the marriage, but I guess for him they are serious enough that he doesn't see a future in it.
He wants out. Some men periodically say this, but don't follow through - but some do. I think you need some marriage counselling, and quick - see if you can at least get him to agree to that before making any huge life-changing decisions. Good luck : (
