writes: my boyfriend of 50 is in £25,000 debt and it doesn't look like it's going to be cleared by the time he's retired. he says it's a mixture of things but generally bulit up from everyday living - i can't really see how because he hasn't had any luxuries altough he's got 5 children.should he go bankrupt?

he could be debt free in 5 years maybe less.
He needs to ring the CCCS consumer credit counselling service.
Its 100% free. Its even a freephone number.
They will sort it out.

find out where your local office is and book an appointment to see someone. They give free advice, and might be able to help with debt management and such. And I know this will sound a bit harsh, but consider this relationship. The last thing you need is to be dragged into a huge mess.

What is an 18 - 21 year old doing going out with a 50 year old, one who cant manage his own life as it is.
Sounds like he lacks basic budgeting skills, spends money he doesnt have, doesnt live within his means etc. He needs to seek a financial counseller, many church and charitable organisations offer free services, and he needs to seriously start working on clearing his debt. Of course, while he is doing that there wont be much left over for girlfriends.
