Hi everyone

I am about to turn 32 and I’m 8 weeks pregnant with our first child. Although I knew pregnancy wouldn’t be easy, I didn’t realise I would be so sick! We didn’t plan on getting pregnant but I stopped the pill after 10 years for blood pressure issues and apparently were not carful enough as I fall pregnant the first month off it. My biologically clock is ticking so we are great full for the unplanned opportunity but my gosh somebody put my mind at ease when will the relentless nausea stop?

I spoke to my doctor last week and she isn’t concerned, iv lost a few kg and there already isn’t much of me but I’m able to keep some food and water down.

I’m so sick early morning that I can hardly leave the bathroom and once I do manage to eat something I can atleast get moving but I have to constantly eat or the nausea end fatigue takes over. I am self employed as a sole trader in the construction industry so my day to day job is physical and im struggling to pick myself up. This has been 24/7 for the past two weeks. Most foods repulse me and even just the smell of my partner cooking sets me off. I’m trying to stay positive but it’s miserable feeling so sick all day every day.

Does anybody have any tips? I take vitamin b6, have tried the ginger remedies, my partner even got me the anti nausea pressure point wrist bands - bless him - but they have done f all lol.

What weeks did your morning sickness clear up?

Thankyou in advance for any input.

Hi there

Not sure if anyone follows old questions but I’m the original poster and just read my question from nearly a year ago and thought I’d give an update

First of all ha ha I thought I was suffering at 8 weeks… I hadn’t seen anything yet. I ended up in hospital, lost 10kg, medicated and diagnosed with hyperemisis gravidarum. I finally stopped being so sick at about 28 weeks. That’s 20 weeks after I posted this!! Lucky I didn’t know at the time or I might not have made it!!

The good news is I got through it and I have the most beautiful gorgeous 5 month old baby girl now who is the best thing that’s ever happened to me and it was worth every second of pain.

I won’t have any more kids tho thanks to the experience. Thanks for all your support :)

Oh I forgot to add, if you take a prenatal, check if it has iron in it because iron supplements can make you nauseous. You might not need them (you can take individual vitamins and not a prenatal if you like.

Mine last until 11 weeks.

I had only 4 weeks of constant nausea. Like having a bad hangover every day, its awful. I found that I felt better after eating, which is why it is worse in the morning. Some of my tips:

1. Eat carbs carbs carbs, plain and flavourless if the taste repulses you!and try to stuff your face if you must.

2. Have something beside your bed and eat it before getting up in the morning, literally eat it lying down!

3. Don't let yourself get hungry (or in the most cases you don't feel hunger, you feel nausea...) so instead, eat small and often never letting your stomach feel empty.

I know all the tips are to eat food, for me the more I ate the better I felt.

Excessive nausea in pregnancy can sometimes be an indicator of twins or it can also point to a difficult pregnancy.

As nausea can be considered subjective you really have to emphasise to your doctor that it is an abnormal nausea that is constantly debilitating.

You can tell them that it prevents you sleeping and working.

Don't dismiss it.

I have instant nausea just thinking about it and you have to be aware that sometimes you need to persue a second opinion as there are supposed to be effective medicines.

Sadly, if the sickness is really bad you won't even hold the medicines down and this also has to be explained to the doctor.

Dont dismiss this as normal morning sickness if it is an all day, weight losing, out of control event.

Maybe you could go on a drip to get some nutrients into you as sometimes this is the only way.

If you've had a breakthrough and the sickness mysteriously disappeared you should be extremely thankful.

I think at the very least you should consider time off work on sick leave because if you can't eat and your head is constantly swimming in nausea all day, it isn't really safe to be in the construction workplace.

Nor can you realistically be in an office.

Push for more medical accountability.

If you feel constantly ill, at the very least get your blood tests done and your urine tested for unknown viruses etc.

You can get a TENS machine, very cheap, use that on your wrists for the nausea to go away.

Could try ginger tea but check if you can drink that whilst pregnant. Ginger helps me with nausea when I feel unwell.

Honeypie agony auntFor some the morning sickness lasts a week or two or a trimester (so 3 months) for others it's all 9 months. Yeah, not fun on the last one.

I have 3 kids and all 3 pregnancies were different. So there is no way of knowing.

According to Mayo Clinic "Morning sickness is most common during the first trimester and usually begins by nine weeks after conception. Symptoms improve for most expectant mothers by the mid to late second trimester."

More than HALF of all pregnant women have this nausea so you are in good company.

Avoid smells that upset your stomach. For me, with #1 it was coffee (you shouldn't drink any caffeinated beverages anyways) but hubby has to get coffee on his way to work and not brew it at home lol with #2 it was raw meat. I couldn't deal with raw meat without getting violently ill. With #3 I had no nausea or issues. I still have a dislike for the smell of raw meat, 20 years later.

Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. They say a flat 7Up/Sprite can help settle nausea. I prefered Seagram's ginger ale and crackers.

Eat small meals. If you find you don't feel nauseated, try and eat a little. Avoid spicier foods and heavily seasoned food, also avoid salt. (small amounts in food are fine by go VERY low salt.) Try snacks that are high in protein, like greek yoghurt. ( I added a little drizzle of honey and some chopped almonds. I still eat that occasionally as a fast lunch or breakfast.

Also eat foods that are low in fat and easy to digest, like cereal, rice and bananas. Ginger candies can also help or ginger tea but they aren't a cure-all.

Some say to eat a few crackers before you get up in the morning to help settle your stomach. I never did. But it might work for you.

If you take vitamins ALWAYS take them with food.

I hope your nausea will pass soon.

Good luck and feel better. I hope you get to enjoy your pregnancy and your bundle of joy!
