I've shaved my pubic area... Now what do I expect? Is there a major risk of ingrown hairs or itches?

My question is simple guys - I've shaved 'down there'... Now what do I expect?

Will it start growing back straight away? Is there a big risk of in-growing hairs? I'm really worried about those! Will it hurt and itch and never grow back the same again?!

This is not really a big mistake to do if you know how to do it correctly. I started doing this since I was 18, and now at 20 years I enjoy it shaved. It feels cleaner and it looks prettier too, not to say that it turns on my boyfriend.

Yes, your hair will grow back, but not right away. At the first couple of shaves, the hair will grow back on about the third or fourth day. To me, it did itch, and it was because I did not keep it mousturized. So keep it mousturized just in case. The reason why it itches is because your skin in there is new to the sensation and will be sensitive. Your skin will adapt in about a year of shaving. Also, your hair will grow out the same way. Nothing will change

Another thing I want to point out is that be careful in the process of shaving. Remember that the vagina is a very sensitive area, and also one of te main reason why it might itch is because you might have nicks and cuts. I found on youtube a video that instructed how to shave the vagina properly. I suggest you to search for it, though you need an account and be verified to be 18 years or older to watch it. I really recommend it.

I made this mistake before! its really not worth it! A. yoy look like a little girl or a lesbian. B. it really irritates you when it grows back!!! I always trim rather than shave, it keeps it neat but doesnt irritate or look strange!!! H x

PeterPan agony auntI should have thought about that a little more... so let me fix the coarse hair part... FOR A GUY'S FACIAL HAIR, it will get thicker over time as you continue to shave. But that's probably because we tend to shave everyday and we're loaded with testosterone ...that (probably) doesn't effect a woman in the same way...

Awh thanks =]

I considered waxing, but then decided I was too much of a wimp lol. One more thing, when you said the hair comes back more course, does this mean now I've shaved this once that if I let it grow, it will be just awful? Or does it only become course over a longer period of time?

The thing is, I was just trying out shaving as an experiment basically. To see what I prefer.

PeterPan agony auntYeah, it can be. But don't worry about it too much -- I mean, you're getting worked up over something that might not happen at all (or very infrequently).

When I get in-grown hairs (and mind you, this is for my face you might find this a little difficult "down there"), I take a wash cloth and soak it in as hot a water I can make coming from the tap, then hold it to my face for about 5 minutes or so. This moisturizes the skin and helps it to be pliable. I then use either a pin or needle and lift the hair from growing into my skin. I don't cut them immediately because I want to let the skin close back up again.

I was going to suggest this before, but have you considered waxing? As I understand, it pulls the whole hair follicle out and makes for smother skin. But, to me that "Rrrriiiipppp!" seems more painful than having to deal with the in-grown hair issue.

honkifuluvnicole agony auntSometimes, you can get little bumps that kind of hurt a little, and that might be because of the way you shaved. try to shave the same way as the hair grows in, not against it. It prevents in grown hairs and such.

I dont think you need to worry. Everything is going to be fine. And yes, it comes back pretty quickly.

The head on my hair is straight, but kinda curly down there... Is in-grown hair really painful?

PeterPan agony auntOh, one more tip: I get in-grown hair on my face all the time. To help lift it, I use the course side of a wash cloth when I'm showing, but nonetheless sometimes still get them. If you continue to shave, the hair will probably get more course itself and over time, you'll have fewer and fewer in-grown hair.

A male reader, PeterPan United States +, writes (31 May 2008):

PeterPan agony auntYour hair will definitely grow back. Shaving is (obviously) not a permanent removal of hair. And, biologically speaking, your hair has never stopped growing. As far as in-grown hair, if you have curly hair, then you might have something to worry about, but if you hair is straight, you'll probably be fine.
