reader, anonymous, writes (13 December 2010): You can't give him back the lost time, but you *can* refrain from wasting any more of his time (and yours!) by being honest with him now. If you wish to spare his feelings, you don't have to tell him you never felt the same way... instead explain that you appreciate the time you two had together but feel you have grown apart. That's the "nicest" way I can think of to break this news to him. Best of luck :)

There is nothing you can do to give him the time back he's lost with you. All you can do is be honest with him about what you're feeling and end it. Sometimes the truth hurts, but honesty is always the route you should take.
