In some Asian regions, cannabis seeds are used as meat tenderizers and as part of regular spices in the kitchen. Its young leaves also can be used in soups. It does not get people who consumes it get "high", it just makes you want to eat more :-)

BBC (UK) recently had a documentary, where it was shown that on teenagers the effect of memory lost is very dramatic. Age is very important. Drugs are much more dangerous for kids than they are for adults.Note: At the moment the research is currently still going on, but the results are very impressive so far. The documentary also suggests that there is no medical evidence to show that cannabis is a not a "gateway" drug, and it dose not push users into needing to harder drugs like heroin or cocaine. Cigarettes do change the state of your mind, they increase anxiety in the same way that coffee (another drug) does. The claims that cannabis causes schizophrenia is not proven as yet. The problem is that schizophrenia comes at the same age that many people start to use cannabis. People with mental illness are also probably more likely to use drugs to deal with their illnesses. It's hard therefore to scientist to know which came first, the drug taking or the mental illness. Cause and effect is difficult to prove. But there may be a link, especially in teenage brains. Research is still being carried out. Cannabis can cause anxiety, but researchers show that it can also help with anxiety. Who knows if it will help in a particular case or make things worse. It can also make some people feel paranoid, if taken too much or at higher strengths, depending on their own personal physical and mental makeup.Research is still being carried out, and it is both harmful and helpful at the same time, depending on the person using it and the strength and quality of the drug.

The mentally ill are more likely to smoke it, just as they are more likely to smoke cigarettes, but that doesn't mean it causes it so much as both drugs give relief to their mind. Pot does slow down your reaction time in general (not just when you are on it), clouds your mind and makes it difficult to remember much. I don't think it's harmful if used in moderation, however, I strongly suggest that you wait until you're through with college because it is a hard drug to give up and you will struggle through school if you get addicted. It is also very expensive.
Cigarettes are very expensive and will destroy your health without giving much in return other than making you smell bad and feel disgusting and nasty all of the time. I started smoking when I was 16, and I suffered from bronchitis every winter until I quit, so these health effects will be immediate. In the United States, it can costs up to $170 a month to smoke a pack a day. Wouldn't you rather buy a cool car?

If you smoke cigarettes you will become addicted and die a slow early painful death and you will be harming your future children and increasing the chance of them being born with problems.
After reading the other answers to your question, the only half decemt one is from Jessica. Others link to inconclusive studies or anti-cannabis propoganda (talktofrank.com).
Smoking weed is next to harmless and despite what people say, there are no negative long term health affects seeing as the properties of the weed protect the body against the damage from the smoke. Of course the 100% completely safe way to use cannabis is vapourisation.
And also realise that all claims that cannabis causes schizophrenia and other mental illness have no scientific basis. They use statistics to show casual links instead of direct causes. Here is a thorough study that proves that cannabis does not cause schizophrenia conducted by the Danes with over a million people: http://ukcia.org/research/familial-predisposition-for-psychiatric-disorder.pdf
Also note that it states in the Britsh Journal of Medicine: "The smoking of cannabis, even long term, is not harmful to health."

So I would say do not smoke cigarettes no matter what. But feel free to smoke weed without damaging your health, just remember to not mix your weed with tobacco, and if you can use a vapourizer instead of smoking, the high is much cleaner and feels better (plus its more economical with weed). Also like Jessica said, be careful as to not get yourself in trouble with the law. Theres no point ruining your life for getting caught with some weed.
Hope this helps bro.

Canabis has been linked strongly to schizophrenia.

So if you fancy having voices waking you up and screaming at you, telling you're shit and worthless, and should kill your family and then yourself, then yeah smoke weed. And don't think you'd be fine because after 5 days of constant screaming loud noise you'll be ready to do just about anything.
Go and volunteer in a hospice and talk to people with lung cancer if you want to be put off cigarettes, thye don't even get you high so what's the point?
Good Luck!! xx

New studies have showed that Pot is likely to cause ongoing mental illness, where as cigarettes give you cancer and heart disease, etc...
In the long run, inhaling any chemical into your very delicate lungs is not good for you, and if you want to see the effects visit a respiratory ward, and meet someone with emphysema! It helped me give up smoking.

Marijuana is fairly harmless, unless you suddenly need to use your brain while you're high... there you could face some problems.
While I support the medical and recreational uses of marijuana, at this point in your life it is not legally the best thing for you. Even though its long term effect are far less severe than tobacco, it just isn't really worth the risk. Maybe now while you're young you can get away with more, but lots of people just don't know when to stop.
It isn't addictive except in the form a "good time". Some people just never really grow up and learn when it is appropriate and when it isn't.

Mixed studies have theorized that tobacco cigarettes are more harmful to your body than Cannabis. However, taking Cannabis long term can affect your lungs and cause breathing problems. On top of that, Cannabis is an addictive drug which helps "ease your sorrows" as some of my friends put it which can be both good and bad, depending on how much you rely on it and how you use it.
Of course, if you want to play it safe, I suggest you take neither and stick with blowing bubbles out of a straw.
