acidopholous is your best bet- take that and make sure you drink a TON of water to flush your system. I've never tried the yogurt down there... but definetly eating some plain yogurt is good. Make sure your diet doesnt have too much bread, pasta, etc (wheat and other things in it are what the yeast thrive on), and no sugary treats until it clears up. (again, yeast feed on the refined sugars.) I've also tried a product called "Yeast Defense" that is really good, and gotten at the health food store. Best of luck

DON'T use cranberry juice or antibiotics--they work for urinary tract infections, NOT yeast infections. Antibiotics can actually CAUSE a yeast infection. If you can get to a health food store (whole foods, etc), there will be a refrigerated medicine section, where there are many types of probiotics, etc. I found a great medicine there that combines Acidophilus in oral pills (a probiotic) with a homeopathic insert pill. It takes 7 days and I prefer that because it's all natural. The only down side to that is it needs to be refrigerated, so you may need to disguise it somehow in the refrigerator from your parents, if you don't want them to know. The other option of course is the over the counter medicines. You can also take Acidophilus pills on a daily basis to prevent future infections. Acidophilus occurs naturally, and keeps the yeast in check, but when the Acidophilus is killed off (by antibiotics), the yeast can grow!

If you have a twenty dollar bill, head to wal-mart and buy a monostat 1-day treatment. Read the package to find it...I personally prefer it as it is thicker than cream so it won't be so messy. I reccomend using it before bed to keep is in place for longer, and DON'T WEAR NEW UNDIES! They'll probably get ruined. Also, don't use a tampon to prevent the medicine and discharge from staining your undies, wear a pad or pantliner. Tampons can soak up the medicine and it'd be a waste of money. Follow the directions carefully, and you might want to pick up some Vagisil for some itch relief. Trust me...I had the WORST infection a few months ago, and I used like an entire tube. (tears)

I wouldn't try the yogurt. I used it for thrush once (a yeast infection of the mouth which can also be in the vagina, but is usually caused by antibiotics which kill the flora of bacteria that fight yeast). I recommend over-the-counter treatments. Good luck.

Feel free to private message me. Everything is confidential and I'm pretty experienced in this department since I have very sensitive skin (I'm even allergic to most tampons, actually).

A female reader, TasteofIndia United States +, writes (26 February 2008):

TasteofIndia agony auntCranberry juice (make sure it's actual cranberry juice and not some sugared down "cranberry" flavored juice) really helps to maintain a healthy urinary tract system. However, you absolutely have to go and get antibiotics for your yeast infection or else it can really do your body harm. Don't be afraid to tell your Dad - anybody can get a yeast infection. It's totally normal and not a big deal.

If you're really uncomfortable, just tell him that you're having "lady problems" and need to see a doctor. Or you could go to Planned Parenthood by yourself - I'm sure they'll be able to help you out.

Get to a doctor, sweetness!

A female reader, speedcat United States +, writes (26 February 2008):

The best way is to see your physician.......BUT, there is an old fashion method if you want to try.... first get some PLAIN(must be plain)no colors,no flavors, just PLAIN, yogurt and dunk a tampon into the yogurt and place inside yourself as you would if you had your period! This may or may not do the job, but it wont hurt you! But are you sure you even have a yeast infection? There are other problems that can mirror a yeast infection. And the other reader who told you that you need an antibiotic is incorrect in fact antibiotics are a cause of yeast overgrow. What happens is the antibiotic stops the growth of BAD germs but also stops the GOOD germs, which causes to much yeast. Anyways give tha tampon trick a try like I said wont hurt, but if no relief you need to seek medical attention. Hey best of luck.

Sugarbuns agony auntYou can try drinking alot of cranberry juice, but usually it takes an antibiotic to cure one. And you can do serious damage to your reproductive organs if you leave one untreated. Go do a free clinic, or see your physician and get checked out.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (26 February 2008):

natural yoghurt is said to be a cure for a yeast infection although ive never tried it myself, however canestan pessaries and creams can be easily bought over the counter from any chemist and seeing a dr in not needed, they are not too expensive and should clear it up within 48 hrs, the pessary is inserted into the vagina at bedtime and will slowly dissolve, there will be some discharge from this the next day but nothing to worry about, once your bathed it will wash away, the cream can be applied lightly for a few days and will take away most itching and discomfort, yeast infections do not have to be a sign u are sexually active they can be easily passed from the bowel to the vagina causing the same symptoms so no need to be embarrassed most women experience this at some time in their lives. hope this helps

wwwchrissy agony auntyou can buy a treatment for yeast at any chemist, boots, asda, etc...it is a one time treatment of vaginal cream and should clear up within a few days. If it doesn't clear up then you should see the doctor because it could be being caused by other things. for example high blood sugar causes yeast infections too. I know this because i am a diabetic and have frequent yeast infections. hope this helps you :o)
