Is there a problem dating my former teacher?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I was wondering what peoples views/opinions were on two people 'dating' that were previously student and teacher. My music teacher (aged 38) from my school and I (aged 19) have been in contact since I left the school over a year ago now and have recently realised that we both have liked each other throughout my 6th form years (16-18) We were always quite flirty with each other during the time I was at the school, however it was completely harmless and nothing ever happened between us- not even a hug when I was in absolute tears. I never really viewed him as my 'teacher' as we were/are both so comfortable in each others company. For example he drove me and played piano for an audition I had for a music scholarship a few hours drive away and it was never once awkward or weird as we just had soem kind of mutual understanding.

But I wanted to ask what others opinions are of us 'dating' We haven't met up yet just us two but he is coming down to see me this weekend at university and will be staying in a hotel.

A female reader, Kassi (Nova) Canada +, writes (11 February 2010):

Kassi (Nova) agony auntIt might be weird for his coworkers, but the issue with teachers and students dating is that:

1. Students are almost always minors

2. It is considered an abuse of power, because teachers are in a position of authority over you and demand your respect.

Since now he is neither an authority over you, your teacher, nor are you a minor, there is no reason to fear purusing a relationship if the desire is mutual.

I hope it works out for you!

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (24 January 2010):

As far as I know, since you are both consenting adults, there will not be a problem of any kind.

However, it might get the odd raised eyebrow, just about the age gap if nothing else. You both know nothing happened but we live in times where people get very hysterical about this kind of thing.

Also, local education authorities may well have policies in place about this kind of relationship so it might be a good idea for him to ask how it would affect him if this became common knowledge.... Just in case.

Since you are 19 and living away from where you went to school anyway, I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about. Who would even know unless he announced it in the staff room?

Good Luck!! xx
