A reader, anonymous, writes (12 December 2009):

You definitely have a sexually transmitted disease called Bacterial Vaginosis. It will start to smell bad, like a dead rat and everyone near you will be able to smell it even if you wash. Now you know why your sex ed teacher spoke about condoms. Go to your local clinic, the nurse will do a painless swab. After 2 days in the lab, they will get which strain it is then give you the right medication which you take for 5 days. The longer you wait, the worse it gets so act today.

A female reader, old-spinstah United Kingdom +, writes (11 December 2009):

It's not uncommon for some women to experience "spotting" at the time of ovulation (which occurs approx 2 weeks after the start of your period) It's often brown and lighter than a usual period and doesn't last as long.

If you had unprotected sex, however, it could be implantation bleeding so a pregnancy test will be worth it if you don't have your next period on time.

STD's and other infections can also cause a discharge but not always. If the discharge smells offensive, you'll need to go have a swab done to make sure it's not an infection. Not all infections in the "downstairs department" are sexually transmitted so infection could be a possibility even if you used a condom. Your G.P can do all the tests and so can a GUM clinic if you prefer.

If the discharge lasts more than 3 - 4 days, go and see your doctor for sure
