Is it that he doesn't want to commit, or is he trying to protect me in case he doesn't make it back home?

A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Me and my guy friend have been seeing one another, we didn't have a verbal commitment but more of an unspoken one bc he just went away to war. With that being said, one morning I was laying on his chest and asked him if he wanted a life with me post-war? His response was "Anything is possible", and rubbed my forehead with his fingers in my hair. I take that as yes, I do but let's see what happens with this war thing. He has also said "I can't promise anything right now". Is that him not wanting to commit at all or just trying to shield me from heartache in case he doesn't come home. We have shared I love u's. I'm just missing him and over analyzing I'm sure but I just wanted to see what everyone thinks. Thanks.

fishdish agony auntsounds to me like he doesn't want commitment, just wanted some fun before he goes away. 'anything is possible' is a far cry from any expression of 'i want this' and i don't think it's wise for you to assume he said it to protect you. i'd play the field til he comes back
