Both my partner and I have HSV 1 (cold sores). He gets them frequently and I've only had one bad case. Is it possible to spread cold sores and the herpes virus if we perform oral sex on each other, even if a sore isn't present? Also, what's the difference between HSV 1 and HSV 2? Thanks for your help.

Juts like the other agony aunt who posted, you could find really good sites yourself on asha.org and the center for disease control--Okay, seriously you can give your partner HSV 1 on their genitals if you perform oral sex on him if you ahve colds sores--I need to tell you though that I don't know whether you can pass it on if you ahve an outbreak or not--with herpes 2 you definetly can pass it onw whether or not you have sores present. Go see or ask your doctor or go to a lcal clinic or call the herpes hotline found on the asha.org website (American Social Health Association) The first case you ahve is usually the worsta nd then the next outbreaks aren't that bad--and even with that, a lot of people are different and react differently with the virus and may have intense syndromes and very mild symptoms. HSV 1 virus can be found on the face and area around the mouth. HSV 2 is herpes of the genitals. Basically you get sores on your genitals instead of your face. Yet with both types, you ahve to ahve DIRECT skin to skin contact in order to spread the virus to someone else. This means if you ahve a cold sore on your face and your partner kisses you you have a high risk of contracting it. The same goes with giving unprotected oral sex to a person. You can actually give your partner HSV 1 on their genitals froma cold sore in your mouth. Direct skin to skin conatct with a sore. Use protection especally if they had a recent outbreak...and there's always the risk of aymptomatic shedding in which the virus is present on a person's skin, but no symptoms can be seen. Be very careful, and use protection and call one of the hotines or visit the wbesite to inform yourself. You did a good thing by asking, but you need to find out from professionals in this area. Best of luck.

genital herpies (HSV2) is only spread when you have an active breakout

and no its highly unlikely that you will spread HSV1 through oral sex especially if you havent got a cold sore at the time.

anyway i found this information by searching on google which surely with a bit of common sense you could have done your self

were agony aunts not doctors after all ;)
