Go to this site.
www.citizensadvice.org.uk/
Find out where your nearest office is and make an appointment. They offer free advice and will be able to assist you. Also speak to the council as well. They can help.

You'll have to excuse q, he's a Texan after all, and a council flat is kinda like the top of a bluff where you rest your horses.

Please go back to your council and explain your situation. It is difficult for me to tell you if you are a priority case and should recieve housing or if your bottom of the list. Much depends on what your council's policy is.
mmmmm... living in a council house is not asking for a handout. You pay rent and bills like everyone else, but the rent is limited as it still operates under the "fair rent" agreement and is not at the crazy market rates of the private sector, where profit and not having a roof over your head is the main priority.
Perhaps if private property owners hadn't become so greedy, we wouldn't now be in recession and homelessness and empty housing would be a thing of the past.
If you have needs, the council and government are there to help you. Once you get yourself sorted and settled, you'll be in a position to enter the private market and rip people off and look for quick profits like everyone else.

and by useless i mean they give houses and flats to foreigners just like that, but people here have to go without despite the circumstances. obviously i dont expect it to be anything nice.
im on here asking before i go there because i wanted more information. i have had a good education and i have a part time job i like thank you very much...im not in a cycle where i rely on handouts i work to make a living, so before judging people, take a look at yourselfs.

Why you are asking on here, I don't understand. You need to enquire at your local council and they will assess your needs and tell you what options you have.
Also you might say the council are useless at times but it seems to me they have your family living in a council property, perhaps you should be a little more grateful for what you've already got, eh?
