Ok this is nothing to do with love I guess I'm just looking for comfort...

I've just read the most horrific case of animal cruelty on the net and I'm in tears. I love animals and support the RSPCA. But sitting here now, I'm so upset by it, that I'm feeling a bit silly..... I'm just wondering (and hoping) that there are others out there who feel the way I do towards this sort of thing, sickened and very upset. I suppose I just want to know that there are more good people out there than bad?? And is it normal that I'm feeling this upset and angry towards some humans who can do things like this to other living creatures?

In response to your answer Faybelline, I feel exactly the same - I dont get as upset about human cruelty, apart from cruelty to children, than I do with animal cruelty. I know that this view does annoy people, some people dont understand how I cannot care for another human being as much as an animal. Obviously cruelty to humans is wrong also and does upest me too but, like you said, animals dont understand why they are being abused and cannot defend themselves. So just as much as my view annoys people, their ignorance annoys me. "Its just a dog, why do you care so much" Well, maybe because that dog was a living thing with feelings and personality. It had not done anything wrong in its life to anyone so why did it deserve to die the way it did? And sadly that is only one case in thousands. The incident with your cat is also terrible. Luckily he had a happy ending with loving owners but many dont. Its sad that he wont go near humans now out of fear of what happened. Its such a shame when this happens and it breaks my heart.

Im glad I have got good answers to this question. Just by taking the time to read and reply shows that there are people out there that care as much as i do.

Faybelline agony auntI just read that story on the link; I cannot understand cruelty to animals at all. I've grown up in a household full of pets and I just don't get how people can be so cruel; one of our cats was dumped in a wheely bin as a kitten and his paws were blood soaked from trying desperately to climb out. He is physically fine now but he is mentally affected and he won't come near us; you can tell he wants to be friendly but he is just terrified and we have never hurt him or given him reason to be scared in the 3 or 4 years that we've had him.

I don't get as upset about cruelty to humans as much as I do about cruelty to animals (with the exception of child cruelty and abuse; they're just as innocent) because animals don't and can't understand or defend themselves and rely on and trust humans so much.

In response to the anonymous answer, the link to the page is above. I know what is classed as cruelty and what isnt.

shandygirl agony auntI understand how you feel. My heart breaks when I see cruelty to both animals and humans.

There are a lot of sick, evil, or just plain "ignorant" people out there. All we can do is try to make a difference, no matter how small.

There is a Parable about a little girl who was standing on an ocean beach, throwing washed up clams back into the ocean. A man walked up to her and said... "There are sooo many of them, millions of them, what kind of difference can you possibly make?" As She picked up another clam to throw back into the water, She said... " It makes a difference to THIS one"

Yin and Yang my friend.

Good cannot thrive without something evil to inspire it.

I cannot condone acts of cruelty against anything.

But without people like that to keep people like you pushing forward... we'd stagnate and die out as a species.

Keep at it. You can't win the war. No one can. But you can keep some good out there alive and kicking. In the end, that's all that matters.

A reader, anonymous, writes (8 October 2008):

Sorry babes, I'm one of those people who don't really understand. I get emotional listening to the stories of cruelty between humans, especially cruelty for human children, and cases of mass murder which runs into the millions, so I don't have time to campaign against cruelty to animals. I know many people feel like you, and cruelty to anything living is always hurtful and wrong. But I am human, and my energies are taken up with human suffering, that I must admit there is not much energy left to think about the suffering of other species and animals. I was advised to not look at suffering if it causes me too much pain, and concentrate on the loving and kind things people do. I think this advice might help you as well. Always looking at suffering and cruelty can give you very strange ideas about the amount of wickedness in the world. Most people are actually kind, it's a small minority that practice cruelty against other living creatures on earth. Please remember that...

can you send me the link to the piece of animal cruelty so i can give you a sincere answer? because obviously there are lines, and levels of animal cruelty. eg I dont think smakcing a lazy horse with a whip is cruel but I think beating a horse sore with a stick is vicious.

Thank you for your answers. Yes that is how I see it, that we all share this Earth. It just breaks my heart. And I cant ignore it because that makes me feel worse....I need to know that Im helping as much I can. Maybe youre right that I shouldt read all the details but unfortunately its kind of hard not to as a supporter of the rspca. Also, its getting these stories out that raise awareness and make people listen to what kind of cruelty is going on and then makes them want to help in the battle against it. Its very sad that alot of people ignore it, not because they dont care, but because they would rather not know as its too upsetting. I myself was like that a few years ago but since listening and paying attention to the stories I have become more involved in the fight against cruelty by doing a number of fundraising events. I suppose its just something I feel strongly about and not everyone has to feel the same as me.

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (7 October 2008):

There are some horrible horrible people in the world. But as you say yourself... there are people like the RSPCA out there too.

Have a think about the statistics. You have seen one case of animal cruelty there. But how many cases of spoiled happy cats and dogs and rabbits are there out there? Far far far more.

If it upsets you then I advise you to stop reading about cases. Just accept that they happen but you don't want to know the details. They deliberately don't report lots of stories on the news because the details are too horrible. Some things you just have to accept that you don't want to know. As long as you raise awareness and stop it happening in the first place then you don't need to know the nastiest details.

Good Luck!! xx
