A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I am aware that child porn is illegal, but I am currently in highschool, and many of my friends, all of which are under 18, exchange sexually explicit photos. None of these pictures are put on the web, or etc. But they exchange them to each other for personal use. Is it illegal for a child, to have child porn on their computer, if it is of their friends or partners in the same age group?

well i don't see it to be wrong as having nude pics of other minors...since it is minors and minors....if that was wrong then sex would be wrong amongst minors...and a lot off minors are in trouble...but be careful not to take ure face or anyother signs tat can tie u down to the pictures...because people might use it someday...we can never really say...the best thing is to be safe and before u exchange do a background check on them....

Chippy334 agony auntI would say keep it hush hush. People may think it's wrong but I know I'd prefer to see girls my own age without clothes than older women that are in their 30s or 40s

A female reader, timetobefree United States +, writes (29 September 2007):

Since the availability of the internet, having any nude, or semi nude photos taken of yourself, or your friends can be dangerous. If not by predators, by scorned friends.

That would be good revenge or retaliation to put nude photos on UTUBE, and the like.

Just look at the example of the teen girl (who was 18) from High School Musical who had nude photos spread all over the internet of her. She had to publically apologize. She embarrassed herself, her family, the company she worked for and it sent a wrong message to the young elementary school kids that look up to these Disney teens.

Or if the feds did a sting, your parents could be held accountable, and if found guilty would carry a sexual predator tag!

This is an extremely slippery slope...Also, as another poster sugessted...What happened to respecting yourself!!!It is not cool, grown up, or smart to trade nude photos of each other on the computer...if you don't want the ENTIRE School, neighborhood, or internet to see. Or more importantly, do you want your parents to see them??

Jamer70 agony auntIT IS against the law.

The viewers age doesnt matter. Its the "Actors" age that matters and since theirs underage its illegal for them to view/have the porn. Sometimes the parents are responsible for the childs actions, so i would be very careful.

A male reader, rcn United States +, writes (17 September 2007):

rcn agony auntYes it is. It's not against the law for those under 18 to view those under 18, but if caught with the pictures, who's to blame. Quite a few states have a law where the parents are responsible for the actions of their kids. So it would be viewed in two different ways:

1. Should the parent's be responsible for the actions of their kids housing porno pictures of minors?

2. Would the parent's be held liable for the minors actions in keeping illegal photos, when the picture is of a party who is under the age of 18 and are not of legal age to consent to the pictures being taken.

The legal looks in directions we generally wouldn't or not think it matters much. Such as, all though they are not posted on the internet, would having them on a computer which has internet access be an issue because it allows the tools submit on the internet, even if that's not you intentions?

I don't know the law in your locale. But, clerly they should not be doing this, it's a sign of immaturity. Also, a sign that they doen't respect themselves. It is also dangerous because it may attract perverts to them or show up later in their lives and knock them out of a good, school, job, relationship or something else they might want to do. They should get the pictures back and destoy them all.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (16 September 2007):

actually it's a grey area. that's generally considered inapropriate sexual play and not psychologically damaging in the way that if an older person had manipulated them into it but it gets dodgey very fast when there's age gaps thrown into the mix of even a few years. It happens a lot though and a lot of teenagers do the whole exchanging pics thing. It can feel like a safe way to experiment with your sexuality. You can't always trust the people you consider mates at that age though and people can be jerks and misuse those kind of pictures. So if your wondering to your self whether or not it's okay to do... I guess it is okay in so far as if you already have don't feel guilty or worry too much about what's done but pictures are permanent and they aren't the sort you'll want everyone to see and be careful with anyone you don't know in person. It's too easy for people to lie about their age. If your under age by about a year or two and have pics of someone a fair bit younger that can be very dodgey though cos there's a power imbalance involved and that's where it can mess people up and that's why there's laws there to protect underage people. I didn't always realise that the laws were for my protection when I was younger and I really wish I had and didn't try to grow up so fast to be honest.
