Is is possible to fall in love with someone half way across the world?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I am going to cut this as short as I possible can.

I am in a long-distance relationship. I met this amazing guy almost 7 months ago when I was in the US, he is part of the same family as I, and we spent time together - it was an INSTANT attraction. I obviously had to come back home to the UK, and ever since then, we have been speaking (so we've been speaking for the past 7 months). And for the past 3 or so months we have been speaking EVERY single day, whether it is by phone calls, internet or text messaging, he's even purchased extra mobile phones that are worldwide in order to call me more often and make it easier.

We speak about anything and everything, and I am learning more about myself, as well as about him, and every conversation we have is something educating, new, exciting and intimate. He has told his family about me, and I know it appears to be a stupid question,

but is it possible to, not be IN love just yet, but be FALLING in love with this guy despite the distance and the lack of time we've spent together over the past months? I am going to see him in the summer, and he talks about me being his future, and vice versa. My feelings are beyond words, they are immense and just unbelievable, I literally can not put into words how different I feel with him, different than any other guys I have known, and I feel like I am falling in love with him...

A male reader, Tomas United States +, writes (21 February 2009):

It is certainly possible. In fact, it can almost be too easy, as it's easy to put your best foot forward when you only need to do it for a couple hours a day. Also, it is easier to imagine the other person as just who you hope they are, without messy realities (sits on the couch too much, is grumpy, is a slob/neat freak) intruding. People who are socially uncomfortable may find it easier to be themselves over email/SMS/phone.

Not trying to be a party pooper; I dated my wife internationally for a long time. But don't confuse the hopes of distance with the real experience of dating someone regularly and in person. It's still just an exciting possibility, and will remain so at your distance.

Good luck!

Mrs. Mom agony auntI think you are having a wonderful time getting to know this other person and getting to know yourself better as well as experiencing first love.

I agree with Gina that you have to spend time in person to really get to know a person, so I don't think you should make a commitment to this young gent, but I think it's great to cherish the chats, letters, and phone calls with him.
