writes:I have a pretty big problem. My boyfriend is a former alcoholic. I have trust issues with him. The past few times we have seen each other he has smelt very strange. I thought maybe it was bad body odor. Then he came to my house and the next day my mom asked me if we had been drinking because he smelt like alcohol. I had noticed the smelled like it before. He claims he hasn't been drinking but his friends all drink and his parents do as well. He claims he hasn't been. How do I know if he is lying?

 I have trouble believing him too. If he is consistently smelling like booze, he is probably drinking again. Is he attending AA or anything to keep him steady in being sober?
Maybe you could invest in a breathalyzer. That would prove if he'd been drinking or not. If you find that he is off the wagon, please make sure he does not drink and drive. If he drives above the legal limit, you should call the police. Do not enable him or ignore potentially dangerous situations!

reader, anonymous, writes (30 December 2010): he is obviously lying... addicts are very good at lying... you should try and tell him that you found out.. Tell him that it's better not to lie to you because you can't be with a guy that lies to you... stick with that, and act like you know that he's been drinking, because he does... i have the same problem with my bf, but alcohol is pot in my case.. i went with that, i told him that he can't lie to me anymore, even though i didn't know he was doing it, i just assumed, but i knew it deep down.. so i told him that i know, and then he came clean.. try that, it worked for me..
