Hiyaaaa,

Well, I've got to a stage in my life where my body isn't going to go any slimmer and as in 6th form (college) we stopped having P.E lesson even though it wasn't exciting I still had fun and its you know exercising!

I wanna start going to the gym and I'll be honest... really honest, I don't know why I'm scared to go! Like really scared, my concerned is guys in the gym... will they do anything?

And I've got eczema too and it's kinda getting worse which is why my mum suggested I should exercise to sweat it out. So I don't know if they would stare!

Also if I wanna go gym is that scary? And is using mix gender gym better or is it better to use same sex gym?

None of my friends would go gym with me because either they haven't got the money or they haven't got the time either because of exams and I'm nervous about going gym on my own.

I don't exactly wanna buy a treadmill or run around the block because there is weird people around at time especially near the park and I don't feel safe running outside!

So in reality... those of you that go to the gym... is scary????

Thanks you for reading my question and looking forward to your answers! :D

Tisha-1 agony auntIt's like anything. Scary the first time you go in to a new environment but then once it becomes familiar, not scary at all.

People are there to work out, you see all sorts of body shapes and sizes on men and women. There are the young men who like to sweat hard and clang big weights around. There are the older men who clearly are there on doctor's orders and doing their best to get in shape. There are young women there who seem to be training for a run, others who are working on their figures. There are older women using the weights to keep limber and strengthen their bones. Many wear headphones.

Ask for an orientation and a trainer's consult; most gyms will do this for new members. It makes good sense for them to introduce you to the equipment so you don't sustain an injury.

If you feel harassed or annoyed by anyone, be sure to tell a staff member. I have never had to do that, ever. Most people are there for the same reason you are, to feel better and to get fit. You are not weird or unusual or peculiar.

You'll be fine!

I started at a gym when I was 17. People either love them or hate them! Check out a gym, phone them up and say you want to look around. They will show you around, and answer any questions you have. You should give it a try, if you don't like it, you don't have to go back. Make sure you don't sign up to any 12 month contracts. Good luck!

I never liked the gym that much, prefered the one at work to the public one though. Its ok if you have your headphones in a bit of music and just focus on the exercise.Don't worry about the other users, they probably all have a hang up of some kind themselves.

I go to Zumba twice a week instead now and I love it. I think if you enjoy the way you get fit your more likely to keep it up

No the gym is not scary at all!!! I love the gym! my whole family goes an hour+ a day. Dont be scared. Advice though, if you go and i hope you do, if you use a machine and its a busy day at the gym with alot of people, you see an open machine and people next to you dont assume you can jump on it. Because sometimes people do circuits going from one machine to another and back. Its annoying especially when its busy but people do it. Just make sure no one is on it. I have jumped on a machine being used and they guy was a dick. Also in the US. There are popular gyms like Golds gym and 24 hour fitness. i have worked out at both and I have noticed that people are nicer at 24 hour fitness because it isnt so much a bodybuilding gym like Golds. Soo i would just make sure before you sign up the atmosphere of the gym is what you feel most comfortable in. Because there are many different kinds.

Good luck!

Dear Mandy agony auntHI

I used to suffer with eczema and used drapolene antiseptic cream, and went on a sun bed for 2 minutes, twice a week. Its all gone and never had it since. Sweating in the gym WILL aggravate it, but dont let that discourage you, just make sure you shower straight after and you will be fine. Going to the gym is not scarey at all, there are people with all shapes and sizes, all ages, its not all muscle bound men, and super fit women. ou have nothing to worry about. No one judges you, and no one really talks to you unless in a class, there too busy working out. The men stick to themself, its a really great place being in the gym, If you join some of the classes like, aerobics, you will have a blast with the other women there. you really encourage eachother, and make some great friends. so dont worry, sign up, get fit, and have fun . :D

So_Very_Confused agony auntI love going to the gym.. I've stopped right now due to cost but when I was going I made friends and had a great time.

Folks are not going to stare because they are worried that others are staring at them...

if you don't want to talk to others get headphones and wear them with your music player even if you don't listen to the music.

dress in longer pants and regular tee shirts wear a good sports bra under the tee shirt... leave the makeup off... you are not going to make friends or get dates...

if you can afford it get a good trainer for the first few visits...

i go to the gym regularly, im 18 too and a girl. i can honestly tell you it is not scary at all! nobody is even bothered and in all honesty they probably won't even notice you're there. you're just another person in the gym and won't be half as aware of you being there as you think they are. don't worry, just go for it and it'll give you the confidence in yourself that i think you need :) i know going to the gym has made me feel miles better about myself. good luck!
