I think your great… my Nan lives in France and when I go over to visit her I love the fact that when walking in the street and things people (weather you know them or not) say hello. I say Hello to the people in the street if I’m passing them, I just find that it’s polite… but if I’m walking in a crowd full of people I probably wont say hello.

Your right tho the world would be one step closer to happiness if we all smiled and said hello.

Take Care

ChiRaven agony auntRudeness is SOP in a lot of metropolitan areas in the USA. In some areas of New York and other cities, you might get really abusive comments if you tried saying "hello" to total strangers on the street. It's often a reaction born of fear ... fear of the unknown.

It is a sad state of affairs, but I hope that you will keep up your own efforts to make your corner of the world a slightly better place. Bless you.

Royofthe Rovers agony auntThis is the state of the human race. We have been reduced to our own little lives and our own little problems, rather than stop and take a while to rememeber what surrounds us. We as humans, who are only another type of species living on this planet have forgotten about the environment we live in, because most of it is surrounded in concrete. All animals on this planet adapt and live with their environment, humans change their environment so adaptation is irrelevant. Living in small communities has its advantages, and people who live there will tell you what a better life they have. Living in the city you tend to lose that communial feeling because of the size and the amount of people in one respectivley small space.

Ask Heather agony auntThe Follow up to your Original question prompted me to answer. Yes, what you said in your Original posting all made perfect sense; but your follow up was truly just amazing! The way you feel "at one" with nature, I feel should be shared with others who do not have your insight, your vision. As your depth of feelings come so stongly through in this one short piece you have written to here; I am SURE that there is an outlet for your written talents, I can see some wonderful, meaningful poetry that you have written, in your own unique style being published. Look into this please! With Love, Heather.

A reader, anonymous, writes (29 March 2007):

I've always found it very weird how two human beings can walk past each other and not even acknowledge each others presence, sometimes it's as if people go out of their way so that they don't have to acknowledge someone else.

I like either saying hello to the person or at least smiling. I guess it comes down to individual feelings on the matter, I know some people who think it's weird for thinking this way and prefer to keep a stranger a stranger and not feel any need to make any form of contact.

I've found also there seems to be a big difference between rural and city people. Rural and suburban people tend to say hello to you when you walk past, whereas city people tend to ignore you and put their head down.

A female reader, stina United States +, writes (29 March 2007):

stina agony auntHi HL,

That happens to me most of the time, too. I say hello to people who do not say hello back (it happens a lot at work, which is weird. Since I see these people everyday it seems they would want to say hello back, but most don't.) I figure they're either just busy with their thoughts or don't have manners. They also might not know you're talking to them since they may not know you.

So is it normal you ask? I guess it's normal for people who have things on their mind or for those who are just plain rude. lol ^_^ It is frustrating though, isn't it? Try not to let others actions bother you - at least *you* are being polite, right?

Take care.
