I'm worried I might be getting my hopes up over nothing

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey. I really like this guy, and I think he likes me back. I’m worried that I’m getting my hopes up over nothing so could you tell me what you think, please?

We started off as mutual friends just speaking on msn but we’ve grown a lot closer recently. Things have really changed over the last few weeks. This is why I think there’s a chance:

- He starts a conversation with me almost straight away every time we’re online.

- He remembers a lot of little details about me, like names of pets and birthday.

- He texts me if he knows he won’t be online, even when he’s out with his mates and drunk.

- He sometimes stays online just to speak to me.

- He adds a lot of kisses when we say goodbye and text.

- He teases me a lot but is also really gentle and caring. We open up to each other.

- He bought me a present.

- He likes to make me laugh and cheer me up.

The problem is that we have difficulty talking to each other in person. We’re both very shy and I don’t know how to behave around him. We only talk to each other if we’ve both been drinking. Recently he’s been saying that we should meet up, just me and him. He asked me to go for a jog with him last week but I couldn’t go. I bumped into him over the weekend but we just sort of smiled at each other. Then I go on msn and he won’t leave me be. I think he might feel the same way as me as I recognize his behaviour in myself. I just wish it was easier for us to communicate in person!

I’d love any feedback. Thank you.

A female reader, Auntie E United States +, writes (15 June 2010):

Auntie E agony auntEverything you listed about him certainly points to him liking you. Sounds to me like you are both shy. If you can talk on line you should be able to talk face to face. Go slow, it will be ok, no one has ever died from shyness. He sounds like a nice guy to me. Be careful with the drinking you really don't want that to turn into a social crutch for you now do you?
