I am getting so frustrated. I usually get my period at the end of every month. And its near the end of the month now and the first day of school is tomorrow. I want to wear tampons instead of pads because when I wear pads its so obvious and its just a mess. I used to be scared to look at my genitalia but I have looked and ive gotten used to it. I have tried so many times to wear tampons, i have used nearly a whole box! I have tried masturbating in the bath so I could get used to the feeling of something being there but when I try it wont go in! Whenever I try to put in a tampon im always relaxed. I cant talk to my sisters about it because they dont care. I have tried asking my mother but she wont help me. I think it would be easier to wear tampons, but i dont even really know where to put it! I need help desperatley. I would love some advice from women who wear tampons and would like to know where to put it, how to, and if it will break my hymen. I wont to learn how to wear tampons sometime tonight because the first day od school is tomorrow and im nervous already and if I start my period tomorrow I want to know how to wear one. I am begging for help. I have tried so many times and I want to know is there any other way I can put a tampon in. Any suggestions? Please I need help. Thanx

Get thin ones to start with. Direct it up towards your back rather than straight up. sit on a toilet and relax whilst doing it. It shouldn't hurt or break your hymen (just depends how you insert and remove it really). Once its in you shouldn't feel it at all. If you do feel it, push it further inside, it can't get lost in your body or anything. Remember to change it regularly and don't use them when you aren't on your period as it will make you uncomfortable. Good luck, you'll get the hang of it!

Tisha-1 agony auntIt took me two years to figure out how to use a tampon. I would NOT recommend using it when you are not menstruating. The dry material against your sensitive tissue will HURT, as it is pushed in or out.

Wait until you have a very heavy flow. I found that if I laid down and was very relaxed on my side, it was a lot easier to insert. I used the little OB ones that have no applicator. Clean hands, and clean, short fingernails are a MUST.

Relax on your side, try to distract yourself a little, so you don't tense up and block it. Aim the tampon at the small of your back, put the fingertip in the little dent at the bottom of the tampon, and gently guide it in. Relax, exhale as you push, if you start tensing up, stop pushing.

If your hymen blocks more of your vaginal opening, then you'll find it difficult to put one in. If you have tried for a long long time with no luck, this may be the issue for you. A quick exam by a doctor will let you know for sure.

I am a big advocate of knowing your body, I think it's good that you have taken a look. I would highly recommend you get out a mirror and a light as well. Known things are a lot less scary than unknowns. The more you know your body, the better off you'll be when things need tending to.

I know it's easier said than done, but don't be embarrassed by having a period. Your mom has been having them for a lot longer than you've been alive, so no biggie for her, okay?

Hang in there, you'll get it done one day, so just relax!

person12345 agony auntActually you don't need to worry about TSS unless the tampon has been in for 8 hours. TSS is incredibly rare and usually only happens with those super jumbo ultra size of your head tampons that get left in for days at a time. As for inserting, I have trouble with those cotton tipped ones, especially near the end of my period (cotton mouth doesn't only apply to your MOUTH). Three things to try. I'd buy the plastic applicator ones as they have a nice smooth tip instead of cotton, which are hard to insert even when you're used to them. Also you can try inserting the light ones, which are much skinnier than "normal" absorbency and will go in much easier. If both of those things fail, try masturbating (like near or past orgasm) and getting wet ahead of time. It makes things expand and lubricate and it will slide right in. Make sure you remember you need to be aiming back a little too, not just straight up.

tennisstar88 agony auntDon't throw away the instructions! Applicator in your vagina( the tampon is in it) pull out that little knob then push the tampon in your vagina. TSS is a rare fatal disease that can occur when a tampon is left in way too long. Even if you get high absorbency tampons do not wear them any longer than specified on the back of the box. Every 3-4 hours is the normal depending on how much you're bleeding. You can try it when you're not on your period but doubtful the insertion will be easy, it will not slide in as easy and that's a waste of a tampon. Tell your mom you want to give tampons a try, just to see if you would like those better than pads. Its not embarrassing every female gets their period it's part of life. We can sit here and describe how to insert it but regardless the next box you get don't throw away those instructions because you're going to need them for a guide. Read them, they put those in there for a reason!

This is verified as being by the original poster of the question

I cant read the instuctions in the box because the box got thrown away. And I thought that you put it near your vagina and then push it in. But you put the applicator in your vagina and then put the tampon in right? I also know about TSS you're not supposed to wear them for more than 3 hours, the higher the absorbancy is or the bigger the tampon the more risk you're at right? And can I try once while im not on my period to see if it works? Just for a few minutes? Plus I once asked my mom that I wanted to try tampons and she said it will hurt and she sounded like she didnt care. So if I can wear tampons how do I ask my mom to buy tampons for me without it being imbarrasing? Where do I put it? I appreciate everybodys answers so far, but I want more clarification. Thanx peeps

First of all what kind of tampons are you trying? There are different types.... Starting off with a thin one would make it easier for a start, and also you can get ones with easier applicators such as tampax compak. If you look at the instruction on the box there should be a little diagramme showing where to insert it. If you sit on the toilet whilst you try to insert it, it should make it more comfortable and easy to put in.

I don't think you're supposed to insert them whilst you're not on your period.

Try not to worry about pads, it's not really obvious when people are wearing them. Maybe you just feel self conscious... Or are you worried about the sound they make when you're taking them off in the bathroom?

I know having your period at school can be tough!

it might hurt putting one in. Maybe you need to get smaller ones, the ones you got done work for you. Try to go and get smaller ones and read the box there is ones that are really easy to put in. Like the pearl they work great. Now there is instructions on how. It really is easy if you take your time and read it. Good luck

A female reader, tennisstar88 United States +, writes (24 August 2010):

tennisstar88 agony auntMy mother wouldn't let me wear tampons because one of her friends died from that Toxic Shock Syndrome. I hated wearing pads, it felt like I was wearing a banana seat or a diaper. Always felt like people could see it if they looked closely at my butt, so I feel for you dear! You won't break your hymen, the tampon is too small for that. I struggled on how to insert them at first too, first find one that is easy to put in and that you feel comfortable with. The ones with the plastic applicators are the easiest to slide in, such as Playtex, or Tampax Pearl anyone one of those, I found those most comfortable. Next, pull at the instructions in the box and really look at them. You have to relax, and lean back a little on the toilet, take the plastic applicator and insert in you vagina about 3/4 's of the way, then depending on the plastic applicator you pull out the bottom, then push that part in, now remove the applicator. You're going to feel weird at first, but that will go away after you go on with your period. Much more comfortable and effective than pads. Now to take it out, you just gently pull out the string. Don't fret you'll get the hang of it.
