Hi guys...

I know it's not so much of a love question but I really need help. I've been depressed about my weight now for a while [5 years to be exact!] and I don't know what to do. In the new year I decided that this was it and I was going to lose the weight, but nothing seems to be happening. I've recently been on diet pills and 1000 calories a day along with jogging and cardio exercise but nothing was shifting. Have any of you guys tried anything which you would recomend?

I can't live like this any longer. I'm so depressed. I have the motivation, so it's not as if I'm lazy, but I seriously don't know what else to do. Any websites, tips, recipies, tried and tested diets etc, would be amazing! Thanks xxx

wonderingcat agony auntYou should not feel insecure about your weight. You should be looking out for your health.

Everyone has different genetype (what you inherit from your parents) and phenotype (what you look on the outside) makeup. But, it also depends on what you eat, and how your metabolism rate is.

What is your BMI? Your BMR?

Here are just a few links that you might like to look into to educate yourself (and your friends)

I seriously urge that you lose the pills, and that you eat healthy. Remember, as a growing teenager, you need at least 1,200-1,500 calories to fuel your body. But do not focus on the calories number, you need to combine those number with the appropriate ingredients: protein (animals/fish as well as veg, for your muscle mass), fats (animals/veg, for your insulation and nerve cells protection, as well as for back up energy supply for your body), sugars (in fruits, carbs, for your instant energy), pro-vitamins (fruits/veg), calcium (dairy, fish for your bones), roughage (veg, fruits, grains - for a healthy digestive system),

Eat unprocessed fresh foods as much as you possibly can. Eat plain yoghurt with muesli and fresh fruitsfor breakfast. Theres not a lot calories in there but lots and lots of good essential nutrients needed for yout body. "Listen" to your body. If you "crave" meats, or sugars, it is possibly your body telling you it needs it. Do not binge on it though.

You can find some more information and good/responsible " how-to" information on the web when you google something like "healthy natural diet" combined with "weight loss" and bmi and bmr. Look for sites that are maintained by responsible people or organizations (support groups, or clinics, or doctors) and not just some blog (though some may be quite helpful) or some site trying to sell you more pills or equipment. The cheapest exercise and healthiest, is swimming!

I just met this woman in my photography short course, who weighs about 165 lbs (well, she is also taller than me) and her BMI is 28 (overweight). She knows she is dangerously on the verge of being obese, but admire her for being so comfortable in her own skin. She wears clothes that show some skin but in a very fashionable way. (Actually, petite as I am, I am waaayy too shy to show skin ... except for a bit that peeks at cleavage and tummy sometimes. LOL) Men cannot take their eyes off her ... she is soo radiant she looks sos beautiful!

Anyways, eat healthy and live long and radiantly!

Hello (: im 15, almost 16 and i suffered from severe body dismorphia and bulemia since i was just 12. ive been with my boyfriend since i was 14 and him and my best friend helped me with my weight issues. surley you'd have some one close to u that u can talk to? my problems started off from what sounds like ur problems. and although u may be medically over wieght u can too develop serious eating disorders. not eating enough calories could lead to binging and enducing urself or making urself throw up. i'd just watch yourself with all this calorie counting and stupid diets. if i was u just talk to some one close or ur doctor or sum1 2 do with ur school. good luck xx

1000 calories and diet pills are going to make things worse. that is not enough to sustain your body, so it's going to go into survival mode, and slow down your metabolism....you could even gain weight.

I found out that I had a condition called Polysictic Ovarian Syndorme (POS) after years of struggling to lose weight. Among other symptoms, it causes you to gain weight, specifically around your middle.

Get your doctor to test your for any hormonal imbalances, type 2 diabetes, etc.

Eat health, small meals, several times a day. Exercise, and sleep. Depression also adds to weight gain, so look into treatment for that.

Good luck.

BTW, after my diagnosis of POS, I was on medication for a year, and with diet and exercise I lost 60lbs. Get your doctor to look into all avenues....

well i really don't believe in all that ,,, you want to loose weight ,,,, just eat healthy ,,,,forget about any trash sweet food. Think about becoming a healthy person ,,, with more exercise ,,, and by time ,,, not at short period of time but on long terms u'll notice the diffrence ,,,, because i'd rather loose weight slowly , than loosing alot of pounds all of a sudden ,,,, and at another point gaining twice ,,,, i hope u got my point and has been of help to you

A female reader, Fee-Fee United Kingdom +, writes (5 March 2009):

Fee-Fee agony auntYou are honestly not the only one honey - I've struggled with my weight for years now and tried so many diets it's unreal. I have an incredibly active job, and I do eat pretty healthily all things considered but I just seemed to be stuck at a size 16!

I have depression too, so during a routine check up with my GP, I explained the problems with my weight, and she referred me to a nutritionist who was able to create a personalised diet just for me. And it is working wonders so far!

If you have tried everything and it's just not working, give it a go and see what your doc has to say.

Most importantly, your doctor will be able to tell you if you have something like thyroid problems which can cause issues with weight, and be able to treat it for you. Follow that with tailored advice from a nutritionist and you should be on to a winner.

Good luck!

1000 calories a day and the diet pills is most likely what is making you not lose weight- the body can't function on half the amount of calories it needs- if you starve yourself, your body builds up reserve fat and any weight you lose is just temporary water retention. The most successful diets don't include starving yourself and diet pills; regular exercise (which you're already doing, so keep it up!), cutting out of all sugary/fatty foods, fruit and veg really are the way to go. Your body may just be slow to adapt, but 2 months isn't that long for some- but seriously, diet pills aren't the way to go!
