A female Australia age 30-35, anonymous writes:

So i am really VERY nervous and worried to go on holiday now! Because i read reviews that people break into your rooms, they caught swine flu and conjunctivitis, there's mold on the walls, the ceiling is fall apart. Sick stains on the mattress and bed sheets and the bed covers hadn't been changed or cleaned!!!!!!??

I booked it a while ago with my best friends in the moment, because after reading about how great it is and seeing the pictures and that i was happy with it. Now it's getting closer i've looked at the reviews on many different websites and there's more bad then good!? I'm worried i'll have my things stolen even if they're locked away!! Or that i'll get really ill and that our room will get broken into.

I know i should wait until i get there and see for myself, since it is too late now. But if any of this happens out there, i have NO idea how to deal with it or what to do? Because my friends aren't so bothered by this.. but i am and the thought now makes me not want to go and i feel that i'll be upset and ruin the holiday for everyone with all these bad situations people talked about happening to me out there!!!???

Anonymous 123 agony auntCalm down. Your concerns are natural, but stop looking too much into it. Iv been to many countries, to attend conferences, and all alone. Sure its scary, because you never know what to expect. But it all works out fine.

Where are you going to and what kind of hotels have you booked? Refer to a Lonely Planet guide, its generally spot on, in its reviews. Generally the 3 star ones are pretty good, clean, have the basic amenities, and safe. If hygiene bothers you, carry a clean bedsheet.

Of course you have to be careful...don't draw unnecessary attention towards yourself, don't wear anything that doesn't "fit" in the place, try not to stay out too late, never open a map in public and peer into it, always, ALWAYS pretend to know where you're going and if you're lost ask a minimum of 3 different people for directions. That way you will be absolutely sure you are not being misled. Dont let the hotel staff know that you're a tourist, if someone asks, tell them you have family/friends whom you're visiting in the city.

More than anything, RELAX!! Its a holiday and its supposed to be fun. If you worry endlessly, it just saps all the fun out and you will regret it later. Be safe and have a blast!!

N91 agony auntI went on holiday with about 7 close mates last year in a hotel that had mixed reviews.....lets just say it was the best 10 days of my life.

If you have a safe then your valuables can't be stolen.....sounds like you need to loosen up, have fun, it's a holiday!!!

chigirl agony auntEver been on vacation before or is this your first trip ever?

Take it cool. Stuff doesn't happen that much, if it happens it was because you were stupid and walked down the back alley at night when you shouldn't have.. stuff like that. Don't leave your drinks unsupervised, don't flash your money around, don't bring a lot of valuables (leave the family jewels and huge diamonds at home.. they wont get stolen, but you risk dropping them in the ocean or them falling out of your purse or something).

Use common sense. If they place you're staying at is really shabby, or you are uncertain of the standard (you typically want a 3 star hotel at least), bring your own towel. If the sheets looks suspicious: sleep with your clothes on.

But, are you staying in a youth hostel or something since you are so concerned? And a crappy hostel at that? I've been to some hostels and they were fine. People who want to complain can always find something to complain about, and snobs will be snobs, so don't read too much into reviews from people you don't know. Just use common sense. Don't wander the streets alone at night.

Hi

oh i feel sad for you because you are not looking forward to your holiday, looking forward to it is part of it.

Yes things can go wrong on holiday but that is part of the adventure. God the amount of adventures i have had on my hols, just because it went wrong is fantastic. The memories are so funny and it's how you come out of it that counts. You are very young and should be so excited getting ready to have fun, not reading about ceiling's falling in, mold on walls and contracting swine flu...you have just as much risk of any danger at home. Stop nit picking get your bikini out and camera and have the best time of your life...look forward to laughing and meeting new people and been with good friends who will look out for you.

You will be a coffin dodger ( old )one day, do you not want to remember fun times all because you were to scared of mold?
