First of all, to the anon reader below. One of my friends from high school got married at 18. She's 21 and has 3 kids already. Im older than her and I can't even see having one! It depends on the person, some people grow up faster!
If you use your birth control correctly, meaning that you take it every day, take your off week to have your period and resume taking it after the days--no longer than you should be fine. Birth Control pills and such are 99% effective. There is still that 1% chance of getting pregnant, meaning 1 in 100 women could get pregnant from it. So technically you could but the chances are very very very very slim.
As long as you are using it properly I wouldn't even worry about it and it should not be an issue. However, for an extra precaution, you could use a condom or spermicide foam to be sure.

Hi sophie
I have to agree with everyone here, even though yu are on the pill yu are still at risk of getting pregnant.
It is always best to use 2 forms of contraceptive such as the pill and condom because being on the pill and using a condom together will reduce the risk of getting pregnant even furthe, not only that but yu reducethe chance of getting an infection.
I have the implant and me and my boyfriend still use condoms just to be on the safe side.
Please stay safe yu are too young to be worrying about looking after babies or worried that yu have caught an infection
xx

There's a very slight chance of getting pregnant on the pill, it's not fully effective so once in every several cases it can happen. If you really do want to stay safe then make sure you do not forget to take your pill and use a condom as well. Also, get checked out for STD's regularly, just to be on the safe side :)

The other thing is STIs. As others have said, a condom will greatly reduce the chance of contracting a STI, but will not eliminate it. For instance, Herpes, both types 1 and 2, can easily be contacted by skin to skin contact or through oral sex. The thing with herpes is that the person who has it doesn't have to have an outbreak to transmit it. The virus can be present in the skin and microscopic skin sloughing can transmit it. It is not common for this to happen, but I got HSV-1 this way. Of course, many of us have HSV-1 in the form of cold sores, but it can be contracted genitally too. This is true of both type 1 and 2.
Contracting HPV is sort of silent and some types are especially dangerous for women. Some of the types can cause cervical cancer.

Here's another reason to use protection: http://www.dearcupid.org/question/genital-wartshow-do-i-know-i-dont-have.html
Keep in mind though, that condoms only reduce your risk of contracting an STI, they don't eliminate it entirely. So be very careful with your body and your health. You only get the one, and once you get a virus like HPV or Herpes or worse, HIV, it's yours for keeps.
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control//birth-control-effectiveness-chart-22710.htm
As you'll see on that chart, only abstinance is 100% effective. But if you double up on methods, that is, use a hormonal one plus a barrier one, you make the risk very very small.
Good for you for asking the question and taking steps to be safe!

Hi Sophie - even if you are on the pill, unless you are trying for a baby then you should always use a condom as you may still get pregnant and having a child at your age is really hard work. i should know as i am 17 years old and i have a 2 year old and you never really get time to yourself so please start using a condom!

Of course you can still get pregnant, out of every 100 people taking the pill, 1 person will get pregnant and if you think how many people take the pill, thats quite alot of people. Some pills vary on this though. It is still best to use a condom, even if your on the pill, trust me. If you still don't want to use them I'd advise taking pregnancy tests every month or so just to be safe. But I still think you should use condoms as well as taking the pill just to be extra safe.Hope this helps =)

reader, anonymous, writes (2 July 2009): If you're taking the pill correctly you're not at risk getting pregnant. However if you're not using a condom then you may be at risk of getting STIs. Condom and the pill are the most effective forms of contraception put together as they prevent pregnancy and causing unpleasant infections.Take care

Hello Sophie,The pill is relatively safe but not a 100% guarantee.I got pregnant whilst on the pill and I'd been taking it for two years.I'd advise that you use a condom when making love to be on the safe side, this will also reduce the risk of contracting any STD's...Not saying that either of you have anything, but better to be safe than sorry.Hope this helps Chick :) x
