tennisstar88 agony auntIt depends on your body.

Instead of making my periods lighter, I wouldn't have a period months 1 or 2 but I bled for 30 days straight the last month. Like Chigirl, the depo wasn't for me!

When I asked my gyno about this abnormal bleeding, he assured me that it's normal for my body and that every women reacts differently to the injection. He said some girls have little to no period, some have regular periods, others like me, and even some who bleed for 3 months straight.

If you're concerned about your body's reaction to the depo then call your docotor.

chigirl agony auntYou can get your period while on the depo shot... I'm currently trying the depo shot and I've been having sort of periods for almost two weeks now (been on for a month and a half though) and it's annoying as heck. So depo-shot is not for me. But my doctor said some have their periods and some don't, but the common thing is that it affects your period one way or the other. So this sounds totally normal. Just be aware that if you stop the shot now, you will still experience the effect of the shot for some time, as the hormones take time to leave your body and your body takes time to adjust to it's normal levels of hormones, so it can take some time before you get a normal period again.

bluecow agony auntAbsoloutly normal.

Not everyone stops their periods on the depo.

For some they have one continuous period whilst on depo (i did for 9 months! - its why I came off it).

For others they have mini breakthrough bleeding every now and again.

For others they continue to have standard monthly bleeds.

Dont panic, but if your really worried check with your doctor.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (7 December 2011):

person12345 agony auntIt's normal to occasionally have some bleeding/spotting even if you don't have it every month. Whenever a woman is on a hormonal form of birth control she completely and entirely stops getting a "period" and only experiences spotting/breakthrough bleeding/withdrawal bleeding so you wouldn't expect to be on a schedule with spotting.
