Just thougtht Id drop y'all a line: I finished my trip at the end of February and came home. It was hard for a while as all my mates wanted me to meet them to chat about my trip... in the pub of course. I felt embarrassed telling them that I had to stop drinking and cant drink anymore, like I was weak but now they dont even ask me anymore..I get a soft drink in the round with lads (alas I also do a LOT of driving with bleary lads in the car 8-). this kinda helps though, cant believe I used to talk that much crap!!!)
Made me realise I was weak when I was drinking but it took strength to stop and face the world with a clear head.
Have already started planning a party to celebrate my first year off the booze, I still cant believe it ..a YEAR!?!?!
Thanks to you all.

Yes indeed I was in a panic at that point...to my mind people with drinking probs were those you see on the street begging etc ...it was a huge shock to admit to myself that I too have a problem... I have seen a doctor who gave me a lot of literature and have booked a 10 meditation retreat starting in a few weeks..its been a week since Ive had a drink and its easy now cos my body isnt racked by toxins..I know it will get harder but I really have the feeling that Im saving my own life here... thanks again to you all for your help and supportive messages!

Is there a local hospital or doctors surgery near where you are that would have an english speaking doctor that would be able to point you in the right direction.
Take care and i hope you get the help you need.

go to the nearest doctors or medical centre (any local person will be able to tell u where this is) and there will be someone there who speaks english who can help u. u can get leaflets and information on english programmes to help u. also the owners of hotels or hostels that speak english should be able to tell u where ur nearest english speaking health centre is so perhaps u could ask them? look on the internet and see if u can find any local programmes. heres a website that might help u do this.

if ur travelling with friends tell them what uve written here and that u need their help and support to cut down on drinking. they'll be able to help make sure ur safe and help u find help. u really should be proud of urself for admitting u have a problem, most people would just carry on having a "good time"
good luck x

stay calm, this is a difficult situation but you can over come this.
take a deep breath and ask yourself do you need alcohol to enjoy yourself, try to work out why you are doing this? is it the taste? the feeling? is there some underlying feeling thats causing this, are you depressed? missing home?
Holidays are all about having fun and most of the time we can be satisfied with drinking in moderation.
If you are unable to stop once you start then try not to start at all.
Distract yourself and dont go to a bar in the evening, go to a restaurant and focus on what good food they have, if you ahve a swimming pool wherever you stay and you fancy a drink go for a swim.
if it gets too much perhaps you should find an english consulate and speak to someone for advice on where you can get professional medical help.
You made a reat point that this is a once in a lifetime and if you feel you are spoiling it then you can stop, you have the will power and you can do it, just have faith in yourself!
