A female reader, Susan Brei United States +, writes (19 April 2011):

There was a study done recently that showed that heterosexual women were more turned on by a pictures of women doing exercises than they were by pictures of athletic (but flaccid) men doing yoga or standing on the beach. Heterosexual women were also turned on by lesbian sex, straight sex, gay sex… even sex between bonobo monkeys! It didn’t seem to matter.

Women are more narcissistic than men. Looking spectacular, as opposed to having a big house or a large bank account, is the best way to turn men on. For that reason, we’re obsessed with personal beauty and the beauty of other women (our competition). I’ve noticed I feel aroused at the thought of what my beauty DOES TO A MAN, not the man himself! My beauty, my power to affect a man, is what turns me on.

It’s no wonder, then, that women aren’t as excited by images of men. We don’t see men that that way. While we’re trained to sexually evaluate women primarily by their looks, a man’s sexual value is more complicated. Yes, looks don’t hurt, but a truly sexy man will be powerful, have high status, plenty of resources at his fingertips. He’ll be funny, gentle and loving but not wimpy. While you’re getting everything you “need to know” to get turned on by a woman in an erotic picture or movie (is she hot or not?), you don’t get enough information about a man. Men are not so much sex-objects as they are success-objects.

The last thing is, lesbian pornography is MUCH more sensual than other varieties. Most porn is made to turn men on, so it’s more rough and no-nonsense than women would like. Lesbian porn, on the other hand, features the beautiful sex-objects I mentioned above in the kind of slow, sensual, romantic situations than women love.

So you see, your body is designed to become turned on by images of sex. You’ve been trained by your culture to evaluate yourself and other women by their looks, but to take a different approach with men. What really matters isn’t what turns you on in a superficial way, but who you see yourself building a life with and why. If you’re heterosexual, the right man, in all his complex glory, with his personality, power, and capacity for success, will turn you on just as much or more than lesbian sex porn.

A male reader, Nithyanala Indonesia +, writes (3 January 2011):

Nithyanala agony auntDoesn't mean anything in particular. Men who classify themselves as straight have found me sexually attractive. So have women who classify themselves as lesbian (and pretty much everyone in-between). These labels (including the one that I bear, i.e. transexual) are just words that mean little.

Enjoy what you enjoy. When you meet the right person (male or female) and you know it, labels won't matter.

A reader, anonymous, writes (3 January 2011):

Many straight women experience this same feeling. I think it's about watching the stimulation of the clitoris. The lesbian sexual act is full of it whether done orally or manually. I think this is perfectly normal.

A female reader, wordwhale United States +, writes (3 January 2011):

First off, stop trying to label yourself as straight, bi, or lesbian. These are just made up categories by society. It's perfectly normal to become aroused when viewing people engaged in sexual acts, whether they are two women, a man and a woman, or two men. Sex is sex.

It just means you're human. Maybe when you're older you will only want to have sex with men...maybe you will want to have sex only with women...or maybe you'll be sexually attracted to both men and women. It's not a big deal. Your attraction to lesbian porn just means it arouses you. You're too young to get caught up in labels.
