Hello,

I am a 17 year old teenager and now that I am older I tend to 'dress up' more than I used to, I normally wear jeans to school, but Leggings are so much comfier than jeans. so I would like to wear them more often.

I have a problem though, I would say that I was an average body weight and size for a 17 year old, but my legs look awful when I wear leggings or shorts. I don't feel attractive at all and feel as though boys wouldn't be attracted to me at all if I wore them.

I don't really know how to explain this, because I'm not really sure what all the correct terms are, but the backs of my legs at my thighs (if this makes any sense) are quite noticeable, mum said it was probably just muscle because I do cycling and trampolining, but I'm not so sure, it looks like fat to me.

Is there any way I could hide the 'fat' at the back of my legs when wearing leggings? Or should I try and loose weight from my legs? Any advice would be much appreciated, and I'm looking forward to your answers, my apologies for this being so long :/

I think it is muscle. My wife used to be a ballet dancer and still dances. Her legs look like what you describe. Sometimes she gets down about it, too. I recently read an article in which Britney Spears was complaining about how her legs were airbrushed in a photo to make them appear more slim and how upset she was because she worked very hard to acquire that muscle! After reading that, I told my wife the same thing: "You worked very hard to acquire that muscle! You should be proud!"

Like others, I think you should wear what looks good on you. If something doesn't look good on you, then don't wear it. If you are unsure if it looks good or not, have a friend give her opinion - better yet, ask a guy if you know one you trust to be honest.

I will say that I far prefer a woman's legs to have muscle tone instead of looking like spaghetti. Some women have thighs the same size as their ankles! No thanks! Also, keep in mind the shoes you wear will also impact how your legs look. I know my wife hates wearing them, but her legs look really good in heels because they stretch that muscle out a little bit and give the illusion of length. Also, because of all the hard work she has put in, my wife has a really, really nice butt. Maybe you have some nice features you can accentuate, too, whether it's your hair or your waist or whatever. Trust me, plenty of boys like athletic girls!

I had to reply to this as my daughter had a similar worry. When she was younger she would wear baggy tshirts to cover her thighs cos she wS embarrassed. i felt it would b a phase and xplained to her that with a little exercise she would tone up. She looked like a tomboy back then in jeans tracksuit bottoms n tshirts which she sometimes chose from boys shops! Now she is 15, wears little cropped tops, gets her hair xone and wears a but of lip gloss and is not worried about shaming her booty in leggings, jeggings or skinny jeans. She makes the best of her best assets, gets the smiles and the looks, her confidence is boosted. Be happy with what you have, dont hide yourself away. mx

My girlfriend is convinced that her legs look awful in leggings but I think she looks hot. I bet you look absolutely fine. You don't want stick insect legs, do you?

Anonymous 123 agony auntIf you want to wear leggings, you can try teaming them up with Shirtdresses. With buttons on the front and a belt, they are flattering for most body types. Do not ever go for short tees and tank tops because most of us cannot carry that off!! Tunics also look cool and very classy. Or you can try wearing it with a mini dress or a shirt which can balance out the tightness of the bottoms. The good thing is, you can wear your fave flats with leggings-ballet style, boat shoes...you can try them all.

So_Very_Confused agony auntbest advice, dress to accentuate your good points.

dress in a wayh that makes you feel positive and attractive.

I am sure with cycling your legs are muscular and not fat...

but if leggings and shorts make you feel bad, then don't wear them.

not an easy way to hide lower leg issues... hips and such you can hide with longer tops...

chigirl agony auntListen, you look like you look, and if certain clothes don't look nice, or in your opinion don't look nice, the easiest thing is to not try and mold your body to fit the clothes, but get clothes that fit your body. I think your mother is correct, that it is muscle and not fat, even though your description isn't easy to understand. The back of your leg you mean? There's typically muscle there, and not so much fat unless you are an overall heavy person.

I recommend instead of trying to wear clothing you don't think look nice, find clothing that is both comfortable and looks nice at the same time. Long skirts inspired by the 70's are in this summer, they are comfortable and will hide your legs. Just as an example, or find a more comfortable jeans-type to wear.

I do have one small fashion tip to you though. Wear black leggings or black stockings under shorts. Black has a minimizing effect, and your bumps, fat, or muscle wont stand out as much because of the lack of shadows created to make it visible. Don't wear clothes that are too tight though, in general avoid jeans or pants of any sort, or tops and dresses, that "squeeze" you.

You can also decide where the focus of attention will be. If you want to wear leggings but don't want people to focus on your legs, wear a colourful top or an interesting piece of jewelry that will be the focus of your outfit. Big patterns tend to draw attention, so if you combine a top with big patterns and colours, and a black pair of leggings, I don't think your "bumps" will not be as noticeable.
