A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I'm a 23 year old married female. I've always been thin just like my father. He has trouble gaining weight and I now am having the same issues. I'm 5'5 and weigh 97 pounds. My ideal weight is and was 120-125. I try to eat as much as I can, but my body just can't keep the weight on.

I recently went to my doctor and saw a nutritionist. I was given a medication to take 3 times a day so that I can gain weight. I've never have dealt with any kind of eating disorder, but I am scared for myself and my health. I need more help then just the medication. Almost like when overweight people have trainers to push them and support them I want and need that. What should I do and what do I need to do?

Thanks,Kelly

chigirl agony auntDo you have friends or family that can support you through this? First step would be to tell them and be open about how you take medication to gain weight. Talking about it openly opens the door for support.

Remember that while some people who try to loose weight get support and motivation from personal trainers etc., most carry on without support. We tell people they should loose weight for their own sake. And just the same, you are gaining weigh for your own sake. You are the one who needs to bring your own motivation, because you are doing this for you!

Or you can always come on here and get motivation, we try our best.

person12345 agony auntMy friend had the same trouble as you. I noticed she ate a LOT of carbs, pasta and bread a lot. She ate five meals a day, and always had something to snack on. Make sure you have snacks around (they should still be healthy though, since extremely fatty foods are terrible for your heart). The medication will help, it will slow your metabolism. It takes awhile to work, so be patient. Sports snacks (Power Bars and such) are great for putting on weight. They are extremely high in calorie content, but won't clog your arteries like a big thing of french fries. You're more likely to eat if you have things out and visible. So have bags and bowls of pretzels and nuts around all the time.

The Realist agony auntThis isn't the first time I have heard of a case like this. A friend of mine at school has the same problem. She was told to stay away from cardio workouts and fat burning exercise. If you want to work out do strength training which with a proper diet should help you gain muscle so you won't become too much larger but you will be stronger and have more healthy weight on you.

Also try eating as frequent as possible staying away from unhealthy foods. This will keep the system working as much as possible giving your body more time to develope.

I don't know how this would work so you would have to check with your doctor but I would be tempted to try a high protein muscle building diet and to do alot of short rep workouts to build muscle without burning alot of calories. In theory is should work but I am concerned about you burning more energy then you take in which would be bad.

Try to find a support group, either locally or on-line. It helps to have someone to talk to!

Did your nutritionist give you a meal plan? Do you know how many calories you need to eat in order to gain weight?

Keep loading up the calories! Drizzle everything with oil! Pile on the butter! I'm sure a lot of people tell you that you a lucky to be able to eat as much as you want and not gain weight.

Im not expert so I cant tell you what you can do but all i will say is that maybe you should express your concerns more deeply with a nutrisionist and see where it goes from there.

Good Luck. E x
