Hello, i am currently coming to the end of my nvq level 2 in hair dressing, it's a job i love.... i am based at a 5* salon 4 days a week and i attend the local college 1 day a week, i chose my career while at school and did work experience for 2 wks before accepting a college place.
i wasn't a model pupil and left with no real qualifications to be proud of.... yet i have come on in leaps and bounds since leaving school and starting work.
I recently completed a 2 day, advanced cut and colour course at toni & guys accademy oxford street london, which i found very useful to me. I am opting to do a 3rd year at college to improve my skills in the buisness and someday hope to maybe have my own salon.Being a juniour stylist has been hard work, both physically and mentally, yet it's a very rewarding job,i dont think your too old go for it, i have seen many come and go in my short few years it's either for you or not, but that you will know within a few months of starting the courses or apprentiship whichever you choose, it helps to have a good attitude and a strong will to bite your lip??? you will be walked over, and told what to do, the hours are not always set and the clients needs always come first...... Good luck x I've come this far and i'm choosing to stick at it!!!! but many times i have felt like throwing in the towel.

Actually, in a very abstract way, this is the perfect place to post that question! It's honestly a question of love and passion. If you don't have a love and a passion for the career you choose, you won't be truly satisfied and fulfilled at least in one major area of your life. Finding true fulfillment for yourself is going to go a long way in your success in other aspects of life, like romance, your family realtionships, etc. At least it did for me.The happiest and most successful people had a "crazy idea" they followed up on. And at 24, you're HARDLY too old to start anything. Most people never realize that owning your own business is the best way to achieve personal satisfaction and financial success, and out of those that do, many people lack the drive to make that first step. It seems like you have a genuine passion for owning your own hair salon. You have absolutely nothing to lose by trying, and the rewards can be exhilarating! The only advice I have, having started two successful businesses myself over the past 3 years is this:1) Do your research. Being a stylist/owning a salon like anything else requires a level of commitment. Concentrate on learning as much as you can of the trade, not only from school, but from other stylists and owners. Join a forum for small business owners and one for stylists. Even if you never ask a question, read and learn from their experience. There are a lot of little complications inherent in starting any business, and it's a good idea to learn about as much as you can before to start down the road. It doesn't take much time.2) Visualize your success. Daydream about walking to your shop early in the morning with a cup of coffee, unlocking the door to your own salon, turning the lights on, and greeting your staff and the first customer of the morning. It seems silly, but if you can "see" it, you can do it.3) Don't get discouraged by anything. There may be naysayers, expenses, etc. There are a mountain of little obstacles when you're starting a business that nobody tells you about. They add up in the beginning and most people give up before they start. Don't let this happen to you! If you have a passion for what you want, find a way to overcome those obstacles.Your time is NOT running out, and you're actually at the perfect age to start, so dive in. If you have any questions, or need any advice about how to get started, PM me.

I agree with DrPete- I think you are the perfect age to do it! And yes you should definately go for it before you time passes.
First thing I would do is get yourself enroled in a college on a hairdressing course. My sister has just finished hers and full time it takes two years, and you can take other courses on after that.
I don't think your crazy and that you should act NOW!!!!!
Good Luck!

It sounds like you need to learn to become a great hair dresser before you can have your own business - but don't let a minor detail like that get in your way. Set yourself some targets. Sign up to a hairdresser course in the next month. As soon as it begins, find a job as a trainee hair dresser and get experience. Observe how the business is run and take notes of the good and bad points. Set yourself a goal for when you want to do it alone.
Running your own business is great - I'm have my own business, I get up when i want, work when I want and I'm free of monotonous work life.
Do it - unless you want to be a receptionist for the rest of your life? How comfortable does it feel imagining waking up at 54 doing some unskilled job for 30 years? Set yourself deadlines or that is what will happen when you wake up in those years ahead. All the best!
